Every World Cup needs a game that becomes a forever photograph in the mind’s eye. On Sunday evening, the world got that game. But for all the fabulous goals scored in the frenetic pre-quarters encounter, the Germany-England game will be equally remembered and talked about for the goal that never was.
I don’t know the linesman's name but the world will know it in a few hours. Like Lord Byron, he will wake up tomorrow – that’s if he sleeps tonight – to find himself ‘in’famous. The Lampard long-range strike, which would have equalized the score 2-2, hit the underside of the bar and clearly went over the line by a foot. The linesman disagreed. History had repeated itself. Germany was at the receiving end of a similar controversial decision in the 1966 World Cup final. This time it was England.
Many will rightly feel that overall Germany was the better team and England deserving went out. But nobody deserves such a poor decision in a crunch game. It is like Tendulkar getting a wrong decision in an India-Pakistan knock-out World Cup game. Surely this will spark enormous discussions on the use of technology in football.
But that controversial denial should not take away from the fact that Germany was irresistible. They showed composure, creativity, control, intent, and above all, class. Barring a spell of 10 minutes late in the first half, Fabio Capello’s England looked second rate in comparison. Gerrard and company never played their own game; they just dished out reactive football.
I have written this before and I write it again. Coach Joachim Low’s young Germany has produced the most inventive and eye-pleasing football of 2010 World Cup. Swift, short-passes, telepathic cohesion, neat off the ball movement and devastating counter-attacks – they have showed the world one can entertain and triumph at the same time.
Every goal tonight illustrated something special about the team. The first goal was a tribute to striker Miroslav Klose’s strength and poaching skills. He shook off England central defender Mathew Upson to receive goalkeeper Manuel Neur’s kick before sliding the ball past England’s David James.
The second goal, a superbly angled strike by Podolski, was the end result of a marvelous construction of passes between Klose and Muller. Who was I watching? Brazil or Germany? The goal was reminiscent of the Kaka-Robinho-Fabiano exchange against Ivory Coast which had ended in a similar finish.
The two counter-attacking strikes in the second half showed another dimension of the Germany game. It showed how alive, how physically fit and how creative this all-for-one young team is.
Mueller, Ozil, Khedira are simply magic.
Now Low’s boys take on the winner of the Argentina-Mexico game. If it is Argentina, it will be potentially one of the most mouth-watering games of this World Cup.
I am not saying this team can win the Cup yet. But Germany’s bright football has certainly won it millions of fans across the globe. Brazil did not win 1982 World Cup either but Zico, Socrates, Falcao, Junior and others are fondly remembered even today. I am a Brazil fan but I can’t help wishing best of luck to this band of fascinating footballers.
PS: Just one stray thought. Germany allowed its players to meet their wives and girlfriends. On the other hand, England had kept the wags away from the players. Did Capello’s – no sex please we are British – policy hurt team England?

As an English football fan, I have to accept, hard as it is to do so, that the disallowed goal was only a technicality in the overall scheme of things. Even if the goal had been allowed, I don't see how the result could have been substantially different. The English public has been sold a lemon by its media and its over-hyped players. Instead of seeking scapegoats (Capello and Rooney are names being touted), one should look at the systemic malaise ailing English football.
Cheers (in spite of everything)!

People will be made scapegoats, bullied for sometime; and when the public forgets the event over time, they will hopefully recover. Its what keeps the men in power in their hotseats. Lets change the system from the top ^_^

At last German Shepards bite English chickens. Gerrard the only warrior against swift marching of Germany. England deserves no better place as they did nothing in the group round.

Why cant refrees take help of video clips to take decisions. If both the teams are at 2-2 the result might have been different.I agree germany played better but it's has given advantage to germany at 2-1 after first half.We talk about fair play in games but i think it's rubbish at times.German goal keeper clearly knew whether its in or out.tragedy is everybody knew except refree.I feel sorry for england though germans played better.

It was a horrible game put up by England. Gerrard, Rooney and Cole failed to create magic in game and England suffered huge loss against Germany. England is outplayed by Germany in all department of football today.. Way to go Germany.

Disappointing !!! A single word comes to my mind if i try to recollect today's match .
Being an England fan it was tragic to watch the shaky defense legs of England not keeping up to the fresh forwards of Germany .
Disappointing was the moment when a clear goal from Frank Lampard was not given by the lines man. What was he thinking only he knows or God knows , but it was indeed disappointing .
German's played high quality of football without any doubt. The passing was immaculate ,the ball possession was great and the 4 goals which they scored were AWESOME !!!!
Last but not the least it appeared as if like Waney Rooney just didnt want to play or do anything .He was a pale shadow of the man ,we see in the English Premiership League .

The English football team is like the Indian Cricket team. Both have some of the best players but will NEVER get their act together when it matters. Both are good only on paper and tend to dwell on past glory (1966 for England and 1983 for India)

Well Avijitda, England has always been perennial underachievers in World cup ! They come out with immense reputation only to fizzle out with some mundane performances !..Just like IPL affects the Indian cricketers in T20 world cups..these poms are a bunch of tired looking blokes looking like 'headless chickens'..all in all this result was not surprising one iota !!...Germans..well they always play like a 'pack of wolves'..intimidating opponents with their physical game..infact the best match would be happening at the quarterfinals between Argentina and Germany...sad one team has to bow out !!

I'm a die-hard Argentina fan and for years I've felt that the Argentinian players play more for their respective clubs and less for their country. Watching England in FIFA 2010 evoked the same feeling.
Why is the England team so hyped at the start of every tournament? What have they achieved in world football except cheating their way to victory in the 1966 final? What were Rooney, Gerrard and Lampard thinking? Did they think the whole world's support will carry them through? Although people so love EPL, I personally feel that the level of football played in Bundesliga and Primera Liga is any day better. EPL simply has a better visibility in Asia. And not too many support the Three Lions.
I would've loved to see England beat Germany so that they could be mauled by Argentina. But Germany were simply superb! I haven't seen a better performance in this edition of the World Cup. England were unlucky. It was a glaring error (God only knows how they could not give that as goal!) that changed the course of the game. But Germany were deserving victors in the end.
I'm now looking forward to Argentina v Germany. It would be great to see Maradona lead Albiceleste to victory but they should be fearful of the Germans.
Go Argentina!

If all decisions are correct always, it robs sports of its human spirit - though the team and its supporters on the recieving end suffer a lot. However, as sports have now become more of a gamble, such decisions cause people to lose millions worldwide. Such loss of fortunes should be minimized; therefore usage of technology must be made acceptable in all sports, more so in soccer as its the most betted-upon sports in the world. Turkic origin German midfielder Mesut Ozil may rise in German soccer to occupy the space vacated by Zizou in world soccer.

The encounter between Germany and Argentina has come prematurely. It will be sad to see one of them going away before semi final. This match should have been final between the two.
Having said that, no one will regret England eliminated as they were the team of oldies & outdated players. And how one will convinced with the decision to take out Milner and substitute with J. Cole? How Heskey can be brought in in place of Defoe when three more goals are required? Is this the standard of coaching?
