Rejoice. After 77 years of trying, we are finally No 1 in the ICC Test cricket rankings. A 2-0 victory over Sri Lanka in a three Test series makes you feel real good.
Here's a review of the series:
Like Sehwag, MS Dhoni often doesn't get much credit for what he does for the team and the country. I agree that the Indian captain's batting style is pretty ungainly. But can anyone doubt its efficacy? Both his centuries were crucial to the team's cause - the 110 in Ahmedabad took India to a position of relative safety; his 100 in Mumbai ensured that Murali wouldn't be able to take a second shot at us. Why complain about methods when it gives you the right results?
The best thing about Dhoni is his level-headedness. At the post-match interview, he told Ravi Shastri that maintaining the No 1 position would be the real challenge. That's a leader with a vision. I would reiterate, make him the captain till the 2011 World Cup.
I was also surprised that Shastri got Tendulkar for the interview immediately after the match. It was good listening to the world's highest run scorer. But I was expecting someone like Dravid.
Dravid's contribution in the series was second to none. His 177 saved us in the first Test. Otherwise, we might have had a totally different end to the contest. He had another ton in the second Test and scored 70 plus again in the third. We saw a new Dravid this time - he was ready to be more aggressive, more adventurous. One would have liked to know what really brought about the change in his attitude. So why not him? Why does he have to be in the shadows every time?
Two factors clearly went in our favour in this series. Our catching, as Dhoni too pointed out, was pretty good. Unlike the Lankans who were surprisingly butterfingered, we snapped up nearly everything.
The umpiring decisions, especially in the third Test, also went much in our favour. I would say, it made a difference to the outcome. Dilshan got two rank bad decisions in Mumbai. If something like that had happened to one of our top batters, we would have had a national debate. Besides, Dravid and Tendulkar and others also got decisions to their advantage. That surely helped our cause.
Of course, there was the Sehwag factor. He can make batting look as easy as drinking tea. He deserved the man of the series award. Without his pacy knocks, the outcomes would have been different. At least in Mumbai, the Lankans could have escaped with a draw. He is a gamechanger.
Our bowling rose to the occasion. Pragyan Ojha bowled brilliantly. His wickets were well earned. He wins battles in the air. That makes him an all-wicket bowler. He should be an asset to the side for years.
Sreesanth won us the game in Kanpur. That's really cool. But let us see whether he can keep his discipline and intensity intact. Zaheer was disappointing for much of the series. But then he was making a comeback. He surely made amends on the last day. Hopefully, he will bowl with more penetration and venom in the future. Harbhajan bowled better than he has been in recent times. He got India crucial breakthroughs. So good for him.
Unfortunately, the special triumph comes at a time when Test cricket doesn't figure high in the priority of anybody in India: neither BCCI nor the cricketers, neither sponsors nor the fans. Apart from Kanpur, the turn-out of spectators was pretty disappointing.
Our top position in the Test rankings will hopefully increase spectator interest in the largest format of the game. With some luck, it will also spur BCCI to show more sense in the scheduling of the matches. In Ahmedabad, the Test began on Monday and ended on Friday. In Kanpur, it began on Tuesday, and as luck would have it, again ended on Friday. That means there was no Test cricket on weekend in either of the cities. In the 1970s and 80s, that was unthinkable. I know the BCCI has more dates to manage now. But surely with a bit of intent, weekend dates might have been accommodated. Clearly for BCCI, Tests are no priority.

I hope you know on which topic these comments are posted here. As I can see you are writing against those people who have written in favour of Sachin. I think your comment has been posted by mistake in this section because if you have ever in your entire life seen the game called CRICKET then you would not have done this.
Please see the record of SACHIN and your fav. cricket star and just compare it. You will come to know the greatness of SACHIN. And I can bet you that your fav cricketer will also be a FAN of SACHIN. And that will be the right reply (Read Slap) to your baseless comment.

Totally agree. these days, TOi and NDTV have become the worst places to read views. There is no honesty in the cmments given, and if you see NDTV news presentation a day before any crucial match, you feel like kicking hteir ass. These people create hype in the mind of people, and which in turn makes things difficult for the team.

This is the best year in History of Indian Cricket. We started the year as Twenty20 World Champions. In September we reached No 1 spot in ODI form of the game and now in the test match form of the game. No other team has reached this heights in cricket.
Having seen Vijay bat also proves that the best of Indian Cricket is yet to come.Does he look like India's No 3 for years to come ? Yes.

Congrats to Team India! I think this is a time to look at the positives rather than the negatives. The fact remains that India has been one of the most consistent Test teams at Home and Away in the last 10 years. Nothing in sports comes purely by luck unless backed by consistent performance, and India have done that.
Sri Lanka will do well to stop harping about the absence of the DRS system. They have been hammered fair and square by a far superior side. They need to focus instead on their own missed chances like when they allowed India to get away from 32-4 in Ahmedabad, and dropping Sehwag on zero in Kanpur.
Once again Congrats to India for a superb effort!

While reading your article, why do I get a feeling you are inwardly upset that we got to No 1? Why does everything you have to say come with a negative attached to it? Are we still searching for excuses and ways to belittle this team's meteoric rise in world cricket? Are we still searching for ways to keep doing what most of us Indians love to do most - criticize our country and find excuses to pull down anything positive we see?
Just curious...

yes you are right Ghosh about Dravid. The media always wants Sachin or Dhoni to get all the credits and attention. In fact Dravid was instrumental in this series for India's win. Also most of the former players have praised Saurav and Anil and not Dravid's captaincy. Under Dravid only India registered first ever win in South Africa, Series win in West Indies and England. Its sad that Dravid being a perfect Team Man do not get the credits.

Congrats to Team India for becoming the NO 1 team in the world. There is no doubt that the current team is a wonderful team filled with some truly exceptional players who are among the greatest in the game. But the real NO 1 tag will apply well when the Indian team start winning more consistently abroad and beat teams like Australia and S Africa in their dens, which we have not so far. This will be the toughest part for our team since these teams are very strong on their home soil. In addition, they have pitches that are quick and bouncy, something that requires great skill. It will be a real challenge for Dhoni and lads to maintain the NO 1 tag and show the world outside as to why they are so.
==
What is worrying is our bowling stocks are quite low? With Ishant off colour and none to fill the boots of Zak, it will be a major headache that will strike the team management. We need to unearth some quickies and groom them now to get set to fill the void when it comes. i read somewhere that there are some young quicks, all they need is proper support. RP, Irfan, Munaf, etc have all proved to be disappointment, but hope they can bounce back and get back into the team.
==
We are lucky to have the presence of stalwarts like Viru, Sach, Rahul and VVS, all truly exceptional players. But the last 3 are in the final stages and we need to get the right players to fill their places when they hang up boots. Rohit Sharma, Rayudu, Yusuf, Badrinath, are some who can be encouraged to fill their places when the time comes

its true u criticize a player when he fails and praise him when he delivers. regarding dravid, i remember u had criticized him, but now u r singing a new tune for his scores in last matches.
in my opinion, dravid is highly overrated. no doubt he made good scores in the recent tests, but at what expense? his strike rate is very low and most of the balls he leaves with his arms raised high. he might say he needs time to dig-in. how much time? 10 hours.?
in his last inning, he let 5 bowls go by, and then
gave a catch on a similar ball which even a school boy would not do.
i would even go so far as to say that when he and sehwag were batting, dravid was hogging the crease and not letting sehwag bat when sehwag was
red hot and hitting each ball for a six. that made sehwag become cold and the reason was his missing out on a triple century. otherwise, had
dravid been unselfish, he would have not have taken a single off the last balls and made sehwag a mere spectator. sehwag has dravid to blame for not letting him bat when he was warmed up and missing his triple ton..
just goes to show dravid is playing only for personal records, and to hell with others. if you are going to take a full day to make 50 or 60 runs what is the use? it becomes boring and is not "cricket". why india team retains him i dont know, we dont need "walls" whose strike rate is so low.
sehwag is a man among man, fearless from 1st ball
and big hearted. its a pleasure just to see his face on the tv screen.
in my opinion, any other player would perform better than dravid and at a higher strike rate
(raina, uthapa, kholi and many others).
i repeat, please dont play for amassing personal records, play for country and for team...

These rankings are an absolute farce. The Indian team gets walloped outside the country every time and only piles up scores on dead local pitches against weak competition in inconsequential games. The players ( many who should have retired ages ago) also build up useless mind numbing stats of no value to the game. This is a total farce.

India has never won a series outside the country, they are the kings in their backyard with cooked up pitches. also, their star players are old fogies who should have had the grace to retire years ago, particularly Tendulkar. Lost the T20, Champions Trophy, not a single donestic T20 franchise got through for the Champions league and got wallapoed in the one day series by a depleted australian team. While savouring the victory of India, we remembered everyone. But sadly hardly anyone remembered one person, who deserves the credit for this more than anyone. It's Rahul Dravid. India's journey towards the top started under Ganguly and in 21 tests that Ganguly won for India, Dravid scored at a whopping average of 102. He single-handedly contributed 21% of India's scoring which itself is a world record. Thereafter as a captain, he led the team to victory in South Africa, won the series in West Indies and England after ages. He had only a short slump in batting. But again he rose up and everyone knows what has been his contribution again this time around. But sad is that neither anyone, including Dhoni, either mentioned about his batting or captaincy. This best gentleman of cricket world, has always been a silent performer, at timeg a lone warrior standing bravely against odds and on pitches where others did not know to last for half an hour. From Headingly to Adelaide to Pakistan or New Zealand either in SA or West Indies, this man has answer for all kinds of wickets and each and every bowler. But he hardly gets any credit. I don't demean the contribution of others, including Sachin, who apart from Dravid has been another standout performer for us abroad throughout his career. We have had Kumble, another gentleman who destroyed opponents single-handedly and then Ganguly who instilled a killer spirit in the team. But more than anyone, Dravid needs to be feted for the invaluable service he has rendered to the team and for doing it without any complaints and any publicity each day for last one decade. His value would be felt only when he is gone and I am sure there won't be anyone who can fill in his shoes.

As far as umpiring decisions are concerned it's obvious that if they go in india's favour then why should we cry n if against then WHY NOT! IN THE END IT SUMS UP TO PLAYING IN THE SPIRIT OF THE GAME.

It is a good news for us that India has become a NO.1 side in the world as per the ICC world cricket rankings in test. Yes they deserved to be there and in past they all played very fine cricket so far. But now real task starts from here, Its is the time where Dhoni and his men need to show consistency or ability to win matches against big teams like Australia and SA.In past India convincingly Defeated Aussies by 2-0 lead in their soils. So in test we can say we are a better side in the world. In contrast if we say from past 2 years Dhoni and his men unable to win in Big matches and series. For Example world Cup 20-20 and ICC champions trophy.India should win these series which makes our country proud. We know its not an easy task but we hope they can do this and eventually in 2011 world cup will be belongs to Dhoni and his men.So at last I pass by regards to Indian cricket team.

Congratulations to THE MEN IN BLUE. Enjoy while you can, guys, cos number One may not stay with us for long. In the after match media Q&A session, Dhoni himself was doubtful for how long this No1 status will remain with India. Reasons being India is playing only 2 Test Matches (against minnows Bangladesh)whereas its competitors, namely SA and AUS are playing 4 and 6 Test Matches. SA is playing against Eng in SA so chances are SA will thump Eng in all those 4 Test Matches. AUS is playing 3 Test matches against WI - looking at WI's performance in 1st Test, its very much likely that AUS will give WI a battering in athe remaining 2 Tests. And than Aus plays Pak in AUS 3 Test matches. Again having seen Aus in this Aussie Summer they can beat Pak in that series as well (may not be 3-0) ......... So looking at this, it is very much unlikely that India will be No1 after these test matches in SA and AUS. Proud moment for Indian Cricket though. Cheers PD

First of all congrats to Indian team for gaining no.1 spot and also the series.I don;t think you need to point out each and every player for what they have done in the series.its not only sehwag,dhoni,dravid,sachin...its the total team effort we can say for the wiining the series..of course the no.1 spot as well.As you said this team success increases the speactators.i agree with your point but i don;t find the right thing in saying that test format is getting less interest day by day....its the real format of game...Even if the 20-20 become more popular test cricket will not lose its importance.....Hope we will keep our position at no.1
