Af-Pak is now Pak-Af

Indrani Bagchi,  01 May 2009, 02:34 AM IST

Last week, Af-Pak officially became Pak-Af as global attention shifted securely to keeping Pakistan out of the hands of the Taliban.

Special envoys from donor countries watched in open-mouthed amazement in Tokyo on April 17 as Pakistan president, Asif Zardari showed a film called “The price of terror” painting Pakistan as a victim of terrorism, and then telling the world, “this is your war, now pay for it.”

It took the French envoy Pierre Lelouche to ask the question others wanted to: why is Pakistan ceding territory and government control to the Taliban in Swat? After this question was repeated from around the table, Pakistan foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said that was an “internal affair” and he would be happy to brief ambassadors in Islamabad about it when he returned.

In the midst of signing cheques of billions of dollars, the world had the same uneasy feeling that India has had – Pakistan is in serious denial.

Soon after Mike Mullen, the cerebral chairman, joint chiefs of staff visited Islamabad yet again for his 15th, 20th meeting with Kayani. As one of my sources told me later, when Mullen was headed back to Washington, he described himself as “shaken.” Press reports covering that encounter in Islamabad said Mullen was more “concerned” coming out than going in, they didn’t get the depth of the “concern.”

In this week, US president Obama has apparently held several meetings on Pakistan – there is less concern about Afghanistan than Pakistan. Afghanistan will be taken care of, western diplomats now say. Its Pakistan that’s the problem.

Well, we knew that. The question is, what do we do about it?

You tell me.

I wish there is a simple answer for this problem. I am not going to say every muslim is a terrorist but every terrorist is a muslim. Apart from nuking the entire Pakistan, there does not seem to be a viable option. But that means, several innocent civilians will die.

Well, what do we do about it is a wide and open point. Options are many and they keep changing with time. However, there are certain basics upon which India's options are to be exercised. Firstly, it is now evident that Obama wants to quickly get out of the Afghanistan mess and he won't care if his actions leave India vulnerable. Secondly, history of at least past one decade shows that religious hardliners are gaining strong ground almost everywhere. this means much trouble for India from Inside. I think a war between India and Pakistan would soon be inevitable since Pakistan as a failed State will go for it. India needs a strong and decisive leadership at the moment which can not only take on Pakistan but also see through the Obama game and stand up to the US as well.

Stop all funds to Pak. India should also focus more on internal security. We should follow wait and watch policy. And any intrusion at our borders should be dealt seriously.

This is the right time for India and other countries to support Pakistan against Taliban - forgetting all enimity, India should extend medical / surveillance / military help to crush terrorism - else it will soon be Ind-Pak-Af !

Apart from nuking the entire Pakistan...what a solution Mera. That is totally absurd. I don't think Hitler was a muslim. Also, many teroist within India aren't Muslim. The solution is working together with the international community and ensuring dialog continues.

what is surprising is that there is not a single word or utterance from the OIC which pakistan chairs. whatever india does the problem will spill over when pakistan disintegrates probably in the next 5-10 years. india must enforce it's military presence very close to the line of control. what the govt in pakistan is upto is kind of precipice philosophy wherein it is blackmailing the international community. while giving necessary support the international community must not blindly give into those unreasonable demands of the pakistan govt. last but not the least india must strengthen its intelligence outside and within the country to avoid 26/11 kind of situation.

The basic actuality about Pakistan is that the Pakistan government, Pakistan army, ISI, Pakistan bureaucracy, and Pakistan civil society are already under varying degrees of Islamist influence, having been given heavy doses of Islamization from Ziaul Haq's time onwards. In a way, therefore, the difference between the Taliban on the one hand and Pakistan official agencies on the other hand is one of shade: they are all Islamists. For that matter, it is only an academic question whose finger is on the button as far as Pakistan's nuclear weapons are concerned. There is no knowing who will not turn out to be a crypto-Taliban.
Then, the current operations in the Buner area are clearly timed to get the maximum aid from USA: there is really no disagreement between Taliban and government.
It is unlikely that anything like the Iranian Islamic revolution will take place in Pakistan, but Pakistan will go on being given heavier doses of Islamism (which I distinguish from Islam). That may be a long way from an Islamic revolution but that is all that we can expect. As it is, Pakistan has already gone a long way back to the 7th century Islam and every day that passes promises to push Pakistan further back into that medieval past.

There is nothing India can and should do. Pakistan has doubled the ante ever since US and coalition allies experienced first hand what happened for years to India on the Kashmir border. The next major terrorist attack a la Mumbai that occurs on Western soil will tip the scales and the Americans will be forced to cut off all aid to the Pakistani military - the root of all problems

A number of reports on Pakistan have filled the media adding to the state of confusion on Pakistans prognosis. Wheteher Pakistan will survive, whether it will break up, whether Taliban will hold its sway, whether the Nuclear weapons will go into the wrong hands, whether the Pakistan Army will stand up against the growing Talibanisation etc etc is to be seen.
The other day I was reading the article by Vir Singhvi in which he mentioned that our peceniks have time and again desired a strong and stable Pakistan but the attitude of their shows that its better to have a fragmented state to our interest.
Only time will tell what the future has for the subcontinent- however till now the situation does not seem that rosy.
What Pakistan does for itself may not be so important for us but "What we do for ourselves is of Paramount Importance". We at this stage have to get ready and accordingly sensitise our populace against the likely events which may unfold in the near future.
At this stage I can just pity the Pakistani moderates and the majority who if do not stand up to the fundamentalist onslaught will be dragged into this unrelenting quagmire of doom

Left have a peace deal with Taliban. They are innocent. They are good Terrorist. They are freedom Fighters. Don't bomb them because Civilians would die. Give them what they want. Otherwise blood will spill. If they ask for more keep on giving them more.

The same thing Indian and IC ask for Sri Lankans to do.

We cannot do much about what is happening in Pakistan other than watch the inevitable blood-letting there.
We are at very great risk indeed. The minimal effect will be the spill-over effect from the counter-insurgency operations of the Pakistan Army, when such an operation would start. The operations would start in not too distant future; but only after the Pakistani State realises that its existence is under threat. Such a course correction for Pakistan will not come easily & not too soon.
The worst fear is an all-out conflict with India by the Pakistani establishment to divert the attention from its domestic troubles. The Pakistani establishment may hope to unite all the internal divisive & fundamentalist forces against a common, powerful enemy. India will have to ensure a calibrated response in such a scenario so that it does not escalate into a full-fledged war.

We have to invest heavily in Border Policing & Internal Security. We will need a powerful and a sagacious government to guide us through the coming tornado.

Ask the Indian Military establishment, and you'll get the honest answer! Those are the guys who've made the greatest sacrifice ever since the PAK-CIA policy of bleeding India through the thousand cuts came into effect. Like all Paki excesses, the count has well exceeded the proverbial thousand cuts. Now watch the reverse cuts within Pakistan. The Western world, esp. US-UK-Germany et al Paki-sympathisers have no answers, but the Indian Military is adamant about not yielding an inch this time around. In terms of ground realities, this has had telling effect across the border, with a strong rebounding effect that has ricochetted around the world this time around! We will soon be calling the shots. Pay dirt!!!

The way army deals with its adversery is by cutting the supply lines, in this case the adversary is Taliban, and we need to stop any financial aid coming to them. Pakistan government is hand in glove with the Talibans. So giving any financial aid to the Pakistan government will be counter productive.

What are we going to do about it? Huh!!
What did we do so far? What did world do so far? Forget western powers, they are hardly bothered with our security. We have to take care of ourselves first. We can consolidate our defense. That does not mean send more troops to border areas. We can create strong anti-terrorist squad using ex-military personnel at the local level, the effort should not involve police officers, they are the most corrupt and incompetent part of the administration in any state. Involve local people in the surveillance and monitoring. If we, common men, do not contribute to our own security we deserve no security. Talibans have demonstrated the extreme point to which religious hardliners can go (especially certain religion coming from mid-east) and this will not stop for at least a decade. Let western powers get blackmailed the way they wanted to, we do not need to send aid and we do not need to attack. Let the hatemongers die fighting each other, we must have good preventive measures otherwise our very survival would be at stake.

With the deteriorating condition in Pakistan the Pak administration and the army will have no other way except to turn to the east towards India, the time tested solution to counter internal strife. Are we ready to face them, especially with our maoists creating havoc. The only solution is to go all out to quell the LEFT insurgency like what Sri Lanka has done without any loss of time to show to the people of our country and to the world that we are not weak and we believe in action. It could cause some collateral damage but the indian public will take it in the right spirit. It is only the selfish politicians and some senile individuals who will express their dissent.
It will not take much time to quell the insurgency. Once we are under control of the situation we can concentrate with confidence the threat from across the border. At the same time it is necessary to take proactive action against the terrorists lurking in the kashmir valley as a sequel to planned surgical strikes in OUR POK.
For all these to happen we need a strong PM like Indira Ghandhi.

USA and the West need to know that Pakistan is the epicentre and originator of much of global terrorism. The world knows that more often than not, the upper reaches of the planning, the planners, and the plan in every instance of terrorism anywhere in the world were found to be in Pakistan.
Pakistan and its representatives lose no opportunity of reminding the world that the ‘root cause’ of the problem must be addressed. Only, in Pakistan’s and Pakistanis’ perception the root cause is Kashmir. That is a problem which Pakistan created for itself in 1947, immediately after its own birth. Since then Pakistan has initiated and fought several wars with India in the hope of grabbing Kashmir. Pakistan’s foreign policy revolves around a one-point programme – how to get Kashmir. Even Pakistan’s ‘all weather’ friendship with China is based on the same programme although there is no commonality of interests between China and Pakistan, culturally or geopolitically.
There seems to be some, repeat some, realization in the present US administration that Pakistan’s effort all along has been to invite international intervention in the India-Pakistan relationship in the hope that such intervention shall compel India to cede Kashmir to Pakistan. It seems the present US administration realizes that there is no role for USA in the Kashmir question. If USA were to nudge India towards negotiations with Pakistan – on any question – it will blight the prospects of Indo-US relations.
Whatever may be said on behalf of Pakistan, there is no doubt that Pakistan dreams all the time about the next war with India. The next war will come, and many more wars will come – because western countries are determined to go on arming Pakistan. They want to help Pakistan in the war against terrorism, but they do not seem to realize that all Pakistan’s concerns hover around Kashmir and war with India, whenever it comes.
It is possible to interpret Pakistan’s choice of terrorism against India as the result of its Kashmir-centric foreign policy and Kashmir-centric national existence at all levels, be it government, army, ISI, intellectuals, media, or teachers and students at all levels from primary to university. The inspiration has been anti-Indianism which no one in Pakistan ever loses sight of. It only remains for India to respond with is normal and natural instinct for self-preservation.

The 'Af' should not be appended either in the front or in the back. It has always been 'Pak' and the problem is with the west for not getting it even today. The only policy the Pak has is to get billions of dollars by scaring the world. The Taliban and terrorists are stooges in the hands of the army/isi. Before Zaradari the scheduled visit to US, they say they killed so many terrorists (make up your own number), no verification and the press is banned abd communications cut off. They have been doing this so often, they are not being creative anymore and finally they said what they want to say all along 'this is your war and now pay for it'. The only solution is destroy the Pak army/isi and Taliban will go away. The economic aid should come after the destruction of the army/isi. Ohterwise people don't get a dime.

Well, The whole world was not paying attention to the voice of India, when she was telling that Pak is a troubled state and is on the brink of becoming a failed state due to its wrong polity and militants. Now, US is understanding the situation. China and Russia along with US need to understand the dubious distiction of Pak polity. As we (India) are concerned about Pak drifting towards the cliff, all the key Neuk countries need to understand and get rid off Pak Neukes immediately to keep the world safe. Subsequently Pak govt / army should be forced to take strong military action against militants to the logical end. US, China, UK, Middle eastern countries and EU and Japan should fund this. India should keep out of the Pak-Pak-Pak policy. It is their making, it is their problem.God bless Indians and Jai Hind.

Intresting solutions! The world is finaly realising how serious a danger pakistan is to not just India but the world peace itself. It is a fact India has been crying hoarse to the world for years but nobody cared to listen.
Now that the americans are dying and have seen the close collaboration af pak army,ISI and taliban, they will slowly get around to tighten the screws on pak. What they have yet to realise is that the kind of weapons pakistan is asking for are not the ones one uses to fight terrorists. They have to be convinced to closely regulate the financial aid and make sure none of it is used on any other issue except fighting the taliban.
The vision of a sunni pak next to a shia Iran, both with nuclear weapons,is a very real possibility.let there be no doubt, taliban aims to subvert the world,it will not stop at swator even complete pakistan. It has become a cancer in a very advanced stage. The only way to stem it is to force the pak army to fight them, cut off funds to them from arab countries, stop drug trade in afghanistan and pak.The younger generations of pakistan and afghanistan have to be de-indoctrinated with broad minded open scientific education. The damage has been intensive and its the mind which will have to be tackled.A VERY difficult and long process. Wonder if the americans have the patience to stick it out for that long? I don't think so. They have traditionaly created trouble spots for the world to suffer, without any well thought out solution and without realising the deep local socio-cultural-ethinic issues involved.
The situation is getting very serious indeed. The paki army's arm has to be twisted by the americans to take action against the taliban and the civil govt in pak has to be strenthened enough to finaly control all actions of pak army. The people of pakistan have to realise that they have to make their govt take control of its army. The politicaians had such a golden opportunity after the elections in pak,it was unfortunate that Mr Zardari has thrown the opportunity away by his petty actions.
For any long lasting cure,it has to come from within pakistan.Just like any amount of medication cannot cure cancer, the body immune system has to be strenthened to fight it.

(NOTE> Look up what nations from US to UK, France. Germany, Russia, etc have to say about your country)

COMMENTS > INDIA is not concerned that pakistan is becoming a fail states but enjoying it and want to prove it,, but ican assure u that pakistan was never made to be broken,
ANSWER> We are not concerned, OK its true because we are not interested. Enjoying, No, why should we??? It’s a figment of your foolish imagination. About Pak never made to be broken, it will break by itself due to its own sins and not because of outsiders. It has caused so much misery and trouble for the whole world and India and is now reaping a rich harvest of counter troubles. Do u know Pak Is called the hub and epicenter of terrorism?? Now those same terrorists created by your ISI and armed forces as a strategic instrument has turned against their own masters. They will by themselves make your country a miserable lot. Bangladesh happened due to the misdeeds of your armed forces and not because India caused it. Your men were creating nuisance there and we had to take action.

COMMENT > apart this war which u Indians fought with us but not openly, u haven’t been able to win a single one,
ANSWER> Fool, we have fought 3 wars with u and won all Even the terror war which your country Is playing with us is being won by us while u are losing since u do not have the capability to win a counter terror war.

I am a Indian Muslim and say flat to your face that Muslims are well off a million times than u people or Muslims in 99% Muslim nations and are very happy in India.

It’s pleasing to know that world, and more importantly US, has realize that where root problem of terror lies – Pakistan and not Afghanistan. My personal opinion is that India should whole-heartedly support the offensive against Taliban. Why? Because all terrorists be it Taliban, Al-Qaida, LeT, HM, etc. are fundamentally same – fanatics – fanatic about Islam, which they seem to have not at all understood. My enemy’s friend is presumably also my enemy. So any offence against any terrorist is good for India
Indian govt. rather than just complaining about terrorists who operate against India, try to link Taliban to the other terrorist organizations, expose the understanding and agreements between these various groups. India should not follow policy of differentiating between its terrorists and America’s and European terrorists; rather, prove them to be the one and the same. India should also be an ally under America’s leadership and provide them all the intelligence, even false, to link Taliban to other terror outfits based in Pakistan. It should publicly announce that it will not conduct any offensive against Pakistan (may not follow in reality). This will eventually lead to more pressure on Pakistan to mobilize more of its troops from eastern borders (with India) to western borders to fight against Taliban. This will also mean less strategic support for Pakistani militants who invade India under Pakistani military cover. Ever more shrewd, magnify terrorist threat to Pak nuclear establishment which will American leaders more involved.
Secondly also follow a policy of changing the attitude of Pakistani masses by supporting the poor and deprived my more direct involvements via NGOs. If terrorist organization like JuD can do it why can’t we. Succeed where Pakistani leadership have fail to delver. And that might strike at the chord and may in future bring about change which we see in very few wise Pakistanis.
