In 1979, a bunch of Islamic students led the revolution that overthrew the Shah of Iran. In 2009, another bunch of Islamic students, the Taliban, are walking through large parts of Pakistan, and, at gunpoint, pushing for sharia law to be implemented all over Pakistan.
The Taliban are no longer just a bunch of ideological extremists, they are now inextricably mixed up in the protests of farmers, landless labourers and the have-nots in the extremely feudal in the extremely feudal society that Pakistan remains.
This could be just another eyewash, but there is a greater danger here. First, its clearly happening in the absence of a credible political government that can deliver basic services. Therefore, if the Taliban advance far enough, I could envisage a situation a few months down the line, where the Pakistan army could use this threat to take over governance yet again. And as we all know from long painful experience, every time the Pakistan army is in power, militants have been allowed to blossom. Adn all recent reports are full of anecdotal evidence about the radicalisation of the forces.
Second danger: the advancing Taliban are Wahhabi or Deobandi Sunnis, with no patience for other Islamic sects, and Pakistan is still full of them. If extreme Sunni ideology is going to march through Pakistan, it will be deeply blood-stained by the Ahmadiyas, Barelvis, Shias, what have you.
Stay with that thought: in the not-so-distant future, are we looking then at a Talibanised government in Islamabad, striding forth to impose extremist Sunni thought through Pakistan, with a Shia Iran wanting to be leader of the region, next door? Thats not a pretty picture. And we’re not even talking of an India to the east.
Third, the world is worried about an Iran acquiring nuclear weapons? If Pakistan gets Talibanised, you have readymade nuclear arsenal in their hands. If the ayatollahs in Tehran see scary to the world, they will now seem so much more civilized than the Taliban.
And did I forget to mention that the al-Qaida leadership is alive and well inside Pakistan, guarded by the Pakistan security services?

Well i totally agree with post as the is a larger threat to the world and to India which is not yet seen by many governments around the world. As per my analysis and knowledge about the issue, Taliban are play tough game but with a smart moves as they are not attacking the larger area whereas they are capturing small villages and turning them into there own law and soon whole Pakistan would be under them.
Army rule has always boosted terrorist activities around the Indian border and have also made some history with crossing over the border.
Nuclear weapon was always a threat to the world and now with the Taliban in Pakistan and Pakistan with nuclear weapon is a biggest threat to the world.
A revolution is needed by the Pakistani people who could stand up to them and fight for there right and freedom. Outside interference could lead to disasters effect on the world. And i think soon Pakistan will be announced as a terrorist country.

This is a scary scenario and is very much a possibility in the "not too distant" future , probably, within 6-7 months , if not more !! Question remains , how do we deal with such a situation and what are the options in front of India ? Will we wait to fight the fourth battle " at " Panipat or will we be pro-active and take counter measures to protect our citizens ? How and what is the state of preparedness of India's Airborne troops ? to capture their nuclear assets , if nothing else !! What will be the implications in case we fail ? Because this is a problem that cannot be solved by the classic Indian tactic of " Doing Nothing "

I agree with the view that Pakistan can be turned to a theocratic bullying state. As I live in the country and doing journalism I understand it well. But My Indian friends I always write on these pages while commenting that if we fight together we can win the war against terrorists. There are secular liberal parties in Pakistan like MQM in Karachi and we have a very vibrant civil society but the matter of concern is the fact that our establishment does not want to take action against these evil terrorists. The prove of this statement is the fact that despite MQM and foreign media everyday show the video of Talibinisation of Karachi but the government and the thug of NWFP Asfandyar Wali totally negate these proves. But let me tell you if Karachi falls to Taliban it will be most horrrific scene for the entire world and pecially for South Asia because Karachi is like Mumbai of India with the global outreach and it will be devastating for whole of the region. If we want to save our South Asia we need to fight against them with unity and by unity we can defeat them.

Indrani I agree with you but you do not see the intricacies involved her. My strong feeling is the recent modern Taliban is a brain child of ISI. Do you for what? That is because this way they can play duel role of fighter and protectors of terrorists . For Pakistan the largest income of foreign exchange is from US for fighting the terrorists. They were enjoying this free money from US by diverting this money for its internal use or using it against India. Then when US realized that it has been cheated it asked for credibility for its money. The Pakistani government came up with this moderate Taliban. This way by creating multiple power centers with in Pakistan - the Taliban would protect the terrorists Al-Qaida while the so called government of will(act) be fighting the terrorists and charging US for money. To give this plan a constitutional validity the government of Pakistan entered into an agreement with these Taliban. So that the world does not ask it even to fight with its own people. The irony of the fact is that neither US nor for that matter anybody in the world look at it from this angle.

Well I truly feel that something has to be done immediately to stop this Taliban from capturing pakistan. Taliban is not a terrorist outfit. Its a large ideaology funded by the Wahabi & Salafist from Middle East and their reach and financial power is more than what we could imagine . Once they are in power they will do anything to make a point. Lives will be shed in 1000s or even lakhs. For them they have nothing to lose and a lot to gain. If what you said happens the biggest worry is for India. They wouldn think twice before using the nuclear warhead . Even if we retaliate we ll lose more than we can repair. If something of this sort happens we have to strike first. No Mercy. Kill to destroy.

Mudassir Jalal.. Please dont hide the urban terrorists in the form of MQM. MQM has used terror tectices long before Taliban were in there. Altaf Hussain is a big terrorlist has been terrorlizing Karachi for long now. When you talk of terror you have to see it as terror no mather which group commits it. All terror based politics has to be finished which includes MQM.

Well I do agree to some extent, but the learning through self pain is not the learning, How can people sitting in Karachi, Peshawar, Islamabad are now worried for the South Asia when they were nurturing the Taliban for their own petty political gains. The problem lies with the Political will only and any state if politically willing to resolve the issue can do it. India should close all ties, Withdraw the MFN status for Pakistan and shut down all trade and travel across the border. What the point in developing the Nuclear Bombs if you can not safeguard the country within.

Well, I do not agree. Pakistan is taliban-ised long before Afganistan. They were in covert power there (in the form of ISI, few politicians and part of Army intel). The current insurgents are just the fruits of their effort. Implementation of sharia law etc is eye wash for the religious madmen, it never worked outside Arab countries.
Let us not forget that apart from drug trade the taliban conflict is the only major "dollar maker" in the Af-Pak region. The staus quo in the region will keep this conflict alive as long as it does not threaten their power and US is ok with the results. It is difficult to say anything about the US objective there.
The same game is played in case of kashmir where both the governments do not want any peace or negotiations. The clue here is defense spending.

Pakistan is only living up to the logic of it's creation. Pakistan was created as a state for Muslims of the subcontinent. First it was the non-muslim who were driven out, now it is the less-than-muslim muslim, what next tomorrow ? As someone said India should not await the fourth battle of panipath. India's best interests lie in a non-militarized, non-talibanized, non-nuclear, fragmented Pakistan. Instead of sitting on the fence, and looking askance at america - India should proactively explore scenarios that can lead to this outcome.

This was foreseen by people like us. Pakistan was a theoretical state built with the mortar of hate. The real meaning got lost in 1948 itself. The founder Jinnah was disillusioned as he had realized his folly albeit a little too late. The first prime minister himself was a north Indian unable to come to terms with this new country. He was sadly assassinated.
But, this country has lasted for so many years. Reason is that it had good neighbors who did not to gobble any of its territory. Further, it has a competent middle class which is secular & hardworking. This class of people has sustained this faltering nation for so long. But now they are set to be overwhelmed by the Taliban monster. There is nobody to save them. The Pakistan army had let the country down so many times. Maybe this is the last time they could again do so!!!!!

Obviously we all know that Pakistan is a failed country and situation may become more dangerous in the near future. These radical groups are not just originated by themselves and I would blame Pak politicians/ ISI/ US for using them for their own purpose and in the current scenario US/Pak unable to control these extremist groups in a proper way.
This can happen to any country if politicians are start using this kind of radical groups to "gain power" or to "attack any other country" based on religion, color, cast, language etc..etc..
I think this is a good lesson for Indian politicians who divide the country based on religion/language etc for power.

I think we can still solve taliban problem in pakistan by following some simple rules.
1. channelise any outside aid only in social sectors.
2. No military aid at all. It only increases violence.
3. No outside infulence on domestic politics.
4. Both India and pakistan should stop playing games with each others sentiments.

It has developed such good relationship with China and has been in bed with all the U.S presidents from time immemorable. All presidents starting from Nixon has applauded Pakistan. China has gifted and blessed Pakistan with Nuclear assets and guess what China is a permanent member of the United Nation. India is the most beautiful countryon the Planet earth She has lost so much from invaders, looters yet she has never complained and she bears and bears the division of Punjab and Bengal the displacement of people. The home to original persians when they were exploited by the mass murderers in the garb of religion. So what has changed nothing and nothing will change. But I still do not understand why somebody sitting in Pakistan is worried about Palestine? This issue could have been settled long back had it not been viewed through the religious prism. Yes I agree about Iraq it is pure stupidity of US to attack it. But at the same time Saddam was killing the Kurds inhumanely using deadly chemicals. So in a way it is good that US brought some democracy in Iraq and same with Afghanistan. When you look at the different countries each has its own culture. But its culture and form should be defined as humane as possible. Then the next preference should be give to the religion. Unfortunately most of these cuntries were not atleast humane. It is a shame that all these countries commit these atrocities in the name of religion. A religion is something for the betterment of human life not to nagate it. If it is so the animals are living much more freely the humans in such societies.

The ywill continue to remote control Taliban and AlQaeda from their and Afghanistan's soil. They know exaclt when to unleash and when to leash the terrorists. ONly bad thing is they are using their own people as pawns in this game of chess where the terrorists are white pieces (open agenda), Pak are black pieces (all hidden agenda) and USA is the spectators. Like in cricket, there is match fixing!
By the way, they are handling the Obama-talk very well. Trust me, this Obama admin will likely handle Pak issue worse than Bush's (whoses handling was pathetic, to say the least). USA will keep getting milked until some terrorist group hoodwinks Pak regime and lands either a nuclear or more likely a bio attack on USA soil.

There is no comparison between the present situation in Pakistan and Iranian Revolution.Pakistani people have never voted in favour of religious parties in the elections like in case of India. They were free to do so had they wanted any major change in pakistani politics. They wanted Musharraf out of power and they already have him out of their way.So no need for any revolution.
Iran was an autocracy and the people wanted a change. The king resisted his own people. The result was a revolution.
After reading your comments it seems to me that the pakistans political strategy of using Taliban to fool the world seems to be working well not only in America but in India as well.
USA,Friends of Pakistan group and IMF are going to pump a minimum of $25 billion into Pakistan over the next five years to keep taliban away.

I think there is a much deeper conspiracy to de-stabilise Pakistan and our entire region. And this conspiracy is made by Jews and Freemasons. For those who dont know Freemasons they are devil worshippers whose aim is to control entire world. Search on google and you will find millions of site. Even George W Bush is a Freemason. An interesting quote; makes a lot of sense with some of the headlines we see today.:
“The world Zionist movement should not be neglectful of the dangers of Pakistan to it. And Pakistan now should be its first target, for this ideological State is a threat to our existence. And Pakistan, the whole of it, hates the Jews and loves the Arabs. “This lover of the Arabs is more dangerous to us than the Arabs themselves. For that matter, it is most essential for the world Zionism that it should now take immediate steps against Pakistan.
“Whereas the inhabitants of the Indian peninsula are Hindus whose hearts have been full of hatred towards Muslims, therefore, India is the most important base for us to work there from against Pakistan. “It is essential that we exploit this base and strike and crush Pakistanis, enemies of Jews and Zionism, by all disguised and secret plans.”
-David Ben Gurion, the first Israeli Prime Minister. His words, as printed in the Jewish Chronicle,9 August 1967
Jews are known for making long term plans. No doubt we are now close to Israel. By dividing the South Asian region we Indians wont benefit at all. We need to stand united.

As a Pakistani I don't agree Pakistan is moving towards a proper Islamic revolution as of Iranian one but I do believe Pakistan should copy paste Saudi kind of Islamic rule(Sharia) in its court despite the fact that it has more diverse firqas(kinds of islamic believes). And the reason why I am convinced for this act is of Taliban or other radical organizations won't have any reason to fight anymore and action of Pak army against them coiuld be justified to public (if theymess about afterwards). Now the question how diverse firqas will find justice according to there own belives, is that Pakistani courts must appoint judges from firka according to the petioner's belief and that will be true Islamic revolution, that will be true Pakistan and will meet its idealogy it was accquired for!

Its a similar situation like what happenned in Afghanistan. On their East, India can very well defend its territories and Kick them back to Pakistan; on West they have no enemy and no opposition. They will rule easily and kill innocent ppl from pakistan, implementing one of the stupidest Laws like Sharia. Only problem is with the Nukes. Why are we so much tensed about them? How can we be sure that its actually not transferred to Taliban when ISI goes hand in hand , nurturing them like Babies :D .. If they have it, they will kill anyways... one cant stop them. They aint worried abt that as well. Pakistan Army will never attack their own ppl. Let them create instability in 'South Asia' as per Mr. Mudassir Jalal. We dont need to think about South Asia when pakistan never actually thought about peace in Kashmir, while fuelling Rockets for terrorists. Let the war happen for once n for all. Let this thing end for once ! War is a solution for a long time .. Thats what happenned after WW2. well, as always you are carried away by the western media propaganda. Tell me after Islamic revolution in Iran how many Iraqs, Afghanistans & Palestines have Iran created? Iran now is much more properous than any country in the middle east. Its literacy rate is 92%. It has already entered space research. The ebmryonic stem cell research was first strated by Iranis when it was banned world over for so called human rights voilations. Iran is self relient and is also doing remarkable progress in nuclear research. So what is wrong if Islamic revolution takes place in Pakistan setting it free from the slavery of west? Islam has not endangered other religions. It didnt spread by force. Islamic scientists like Ibn al-Haytham, Ibn-i-Sina etc were the first ones to lay down foundation for the modern scientific revolution. Books written by Islamic scientists like Kanoon-i-Tib (Cannon of Medicine) was taught in English universities for 600 years. It is because Muslims are urged in Quran to read, study and research. The political will of Pakistan is currently dead. Someone within the political leadership "ought to" stand up and own up beyond individualistic inclinations. Some Gandhi or "some" Musharraf has to appear to save the country! The debate whether the army rule nurtured the growth of the taliban can go on but we must remember that India never felt as threatened during the army rule as it does today. Why does Pakistan need US threats to conduct the assault, why could it not have done it by owning up? The question of securing the nuclear arsenal is valid but i am sure that the army of Pakistan is strong enough to safeguard it therefore let us not interefere too much to blow it up so much and divert the relevant concern. When the help of India will be needed, it will be provided. Let us all pray that this does not become another gaza/baghdad. No one will gain from a hate speech.

However, thing are not gone that bad. I can trust my Pak brothers, who are eductated, aware, and are liberal. They will help build opinion internally for secular state, where religion has no role to play in state functioning. Religion is matter of personal faith and let that be and choice be open for all to follow or do not follow it. After all blood in india and Pak is same. they all are from same ancestry. Yes, it is, and a rather dangerous one at that. This takeover is not the result of a simple nationalistic fervor, if these are ever simple at all, based on a passionate love for country, and a corresponding desire to make sacrifices to construct an egalitarian and just society and to occupy a deserved position among the family of nations. No! It is rather a takeover that has apolycaptic dimensions, where world domination, as untenable for such medieval minds as it appears to the intelligent, is the focus of this group. With spirits overwhelmed with victory over the Soviets, and now emboldened with what is beginning to appear as a defeat for NATO, the terrorist consortium, whatever their names, is preparing for nuclear terror. They have see it: for if passenger planes crashing into the twin towers of the world trade centre brought the world's most powerful country to its knees, just imagine what would be the case if the Taleban had F-16s, many other aircrafts, missiles, nuclear bombs, submarines, warships, and critically tens of thousands of young men and women too, more than ready and willing to deliever this to the major cities in the developed world, and India? The madrassas are teeming with young people who have been brainwashed for this very purpose, of course oblivious to Pakistanis, and care little for their own lives. Consider the Mumbai terrorist. Consider their entry into large cities with nuclear dirty bombs in multiple attacks coordinated to shut down the world, and you can easily see that Mumbai and New York were minutarized dry-runs for something much more cataclysmic. The hate for doing it is in place in Pakistan, and the Pakistani communities across the world, and the wherewithal is being put in place, and Obama thinks that he holds the strings to this puppet. The solution: begin the dismantling of Pakistan, seize its nuclear weapons, destroy its capacity to develop these and to make war with others. A draconian hand and a resolve that will not stop until this terrorism is rooted out of the hearts of this people are needed. What else, but terror of indescribable proportions await humanity at the hands of these people, who for years have been playing this game of firefighter by day and unconscionable arsonists at night?

There is no doubt in my mind that Zionist and Hindus are conspiring to destabilize Pakistan. It is in their interest. Pakistan knows that very well. India remains Pakistan's enemy number 1 and the Pakistanis understand that. India is in collusion with the Zionist and aided by the Christian Extremist to ensure demise of Pakistan.

The question is should neighbours allow Pakistan to exist?? It is not the right or will of pakistan or islam but the will of India and US and wishes of neighbours that matter. If Pakistan continues its terrorism as state policy-we do not have to talk too much-just divide the nation into 3 parts and create secular republics Introduce christianity and buddhism as other religons so that these regions will flourish. That seems very very likely given the likely hood of nation collapsing.Pakistan is not Iran anyday nor it will ever be one.Iran is a progressive islamic nation with modern outlook. Its fight with US is very perpheral.Islamic revolution comes from modern moderate muslims not from cowards who lost soul to religious dogs and hate other religions as an agenda!!!

@Rafiq:
First of first, No1 pointed about a religion or any belief. No1 criticised for ppl follow in Islam or in Hindu Religion or christianity. If we talk about 'Kanoon-i-Tib', in India there were ppll like 'CHARAK' right from Vedic Age, which is like 1000s of years before the birth of any other religion.. ... But, that doesnt mean that all Hindus should start fighting with Christians over such a small issue :) "If some1 steals ur idea or knowledge, its not proved that he/she invented it". One must have believe in the knowledge on has or had. .... Its very pointless to mention that..."OH MY GOD, CHRISTIANS/WESTERNS stole our holy Book of MEDICINES, so we wage a war agaisnt them"... .. If I talk abt Indian Culture... It was always Hinduism that prevailed here. First Mughals came , changed things, and we got adapted ... then Britishers came, they changed things big time.. and we accommodated that too... Probably thats the very main reason why we enjoy so good delicacies in India ;) ... I love the rich cultural heritage we got from other cultures... n respect them that way...If At All , I started thinking like your views ..I should get a gun n kill all Non Hindus on that ground... My apologies for such harsh words but thats very simple logic !
Here u talk abt how good islamic revolution changed IRAN. Do u actually think that would work well in Pakistan ?? I have doubts as religion only broke the two countries into two and lead to Hate War since 1947. Even at that time Islam was forthed as main religion of Pakistan. How well did it help your country ?? India became Secular and still is much progressive in all fields. I respect all religion but I feel sorry for the country which almost got screwed for following useless leaders and still Pakistan doesnt realise the real threat???

Rafiq,
What you are missing is that Iran has been maintaining its literacy for a long time, including Shaw's regime. It has nothing to do with revolution.
Also, they sit on a ton of oil and gas which is how they get money. Throw them in international market without oil and then judge their competence.
Its a big joke that you said "Islam did not spread by force". After AD 670s there were incessant wars from Arabia to South (east) Asia for two centuries. This was when Islam spread like wildfire. It does not take a genius to figure why.
Many pakis live in their own world, thinking the entire world is plotting against them. I guess it depends on the history they were taught.

As the political opinion of Obama administration has changed drastically. If Pakistan falls in hands of Taleban, USA will undertake military action to ensure that nuclear arsenal of Pakistan are not used by the extremists.

@robert, just answer me one question. What makes Islam the fastest growing religion even today? Do you still think its by force? Check yourself how many people are reverting to Islam in America and Europe. Only Islam can guarntee morality, dignity, peace and world free of hypocracy. What has west given to humanity apart from materialism and homesexuality? Relations have no meanings. Who created Taliban? Were they not Americas favourite Mujahideens when they struck socialists? Dont teach me history. Its becoming apparent now who has been using terror tactics for centuries. Who killed millions of Muslims in Spain. It was terrorist Christians. They even turned to cannibalism when they enetered Juruselum before Salahdin kicked them out. Do you think we can forget all that and how Muslims are being treated today? Do you think we will forgive you for Zionist terror. I wish you could watch atlest Islam and Science & Iran and West programmes on BBC FOUR channel in which many of you leaders and scientists are admitting how them and their ancestors palyed different dirty games to shift the power.
@NoReligion, I am your fellow Indian :). Unfortunately there has been lot more going on in world to push our youth towards extremism. Trust me we dont believe in terror. Terror has no place in Islam. There is need to look at all prespectives before jumping to the conclusions.

The US and other Western powers use advanced modelling techniques for deciding political as well as war strategy for such things. They have means of analysing large amount of data and number of scenarios such as Pakistan taken over by Taleban or Israel destoyed by Iran etc. Whatever the skeptics may say, sceintific approach to these situations have safeguarded Western citizens since WW-II and India must realize that just endless democratic debates do not help to constitute policy. I do not quite agree with Indrani’s opinion that Pakistan may soon be in for an Islamic revolution. By extension, I do not agree that the nukes may fall in the hands of Taliban.
Pakistan Army is disproportionately stronger than the insurgents. The moot question is: when will they show-up? Up until now, the Pakistani State has been running with the hares & hunting with the hounds. In the absence of any visionary statesman, Pakistan has hurtled from one blunder to another ever since its inception. Worst, the mistakes never got recognized as one. Reparation & course correction has been a far cry. Result, a distorted world-view that fails Pakistan in assessing reality & in assessing its self-interest.
I see the following course of events unfolding in Pakistan:
If the State decides to act in the near future & starts acting against the fundamentalist ideology, Taliban & the rest will start getting pushed back. Pakistan will see a huge upsurge in terrorist violence since those subscribing to the fundamentalist ideology will not give up without a fight. In fact, they would live by it & die by it. The State will nevertheless survive as one because of the strength of the Pakistan Army. However, I do not consider the current military action in Buner district as a course correction by Pakistan. It has been done only on account of the intense pressure from the US. We have to see what happens once this pressure on Pakistan eases up.
If the State continues to remain in this state of make-believe, Taliban and the Fundamentalist ideology will go from strength to strength in Pakistan. Failure of the state to provide the least semblance of governance provides a fertile ground for such an obscurantist ideology. The Army will be faced with a much stronger enemy. It would be nothing short of a Civil War.
Whatever the outcome, future holds a whole lot of terror & strife in Pakistan. In both scenarios, Pakistan will de facto be a truncated state whose writ will not run beyond Punjab & Sindh.

Pakistan is going through a difficult time. It appears to be a situation of default rather than design. If even by design to garner $ 25 billion as believed by many, then it is a strategy that has gone out of control.Pakistan was on the verge of its coffers being once again empty and with a democratically elected inept government by a people quite unschooled in the power of the vote and elections.Pakistan to ensure viability is becoming an unwitting tool in the design of the US for its own agenda of a graceful retreat from the quagmire of Afghanistan.I would not be too surprised that the USA is playing the game of securing Pakistan's nuclear arsenal and control of the country in one fell swoop to finish off this Islamo/nuclear/taleban nexus in the interest of "world stability" and concurrent stealthy expansion of the USA arc of influence. One has to believe that here the interests of Russia and US are in congruence?CHINA WILL NOT SIT IDLY BY!!!!

If people of Pakistan are finding comfort in Talibanisation of the country and go back to the ages, live like nomads (which is impossible in current age.) they can. The countries affected by this mishap should safe guard their interests and secure their houses. Every body is wise enough to understand how they want to lead their lives. The question to ask is - what India should do in response? Should we just wait like a passive neighbour? Or call Police (aka US) or start creating defenses for our home? Can we talk/side with saner memeber of family of the neighbour? Should we invade with our guns to pre-empt? I think that is what our indian think-tank need to start working on right away..

If you see the many interviews from Pakistanis/govts. on channels, you will not find them scary of the current scenario as if they have planned all in advance, they talk with great confidence. The front runner of Taliban are Pakistani. They are playing a game to hostage world with Nuclear weapons. Two-three days before Mumbai episode, Zardari announced in media that Pak govt will not first use nuclear against India. Seems that all was preplanned and prompt India to attack against Pak so that War like situation will be created and with this scarcity terrorist should take advantage of situation and hold world security. This all will stop only when Pakistani People will stand up and fight for their identity without blaming India. Pak govt or politicians might run away from Pak itself but left are common people, there pak nationls should not blindly sit ideal till the things get worse.

Pakistan is surely headed towards a Islamic revolution - though not on lines of the Iranian revolution.
In Pakistan there is a top down approach - the Military + ISI facilitating this for their hold on Pakistan and their flawed view that Islam is the glue that will hold together the "idea" of Pakistan.
What gets muzzled are the entho-religious aspirations of 1. Sindhis 2. Balochis 3. Gilgit Shias and 4. Pashtuns as the Punjabi population takes primacy in all decision making apparatus and form core of the Pakistan Army (>65%).
But will they succumb to the hate filled strict interpretation of Deoband / Wahabbi Islam is to be seen as Taliban is only interested in this but the intellectuals are not.
Who cares for the intellectuals in Pakistan any way? With a population of 160 million, > 60% are in poverty and >40% of all male population study in unregistered madrassas (Deoband etc).
With Pashtuns now entrenched in Karachi, the country will see Islamic revolution very shortly.

I am an Indian and i always felt a kind of kinship with Pakistanis. Indians and Pakistanis should be united and work together not only to eliminate terrorism but also to grow strong economically. Unless they are united there will always be chaos and the human conditions will worsen still. Leaving aside all the differences India and Pakistan should cooperate with each other for a better future instead of playing a blame game. At the same time Pakistanis should strongly oppose the existence of terrorism in their soil to guarantee a beautiful future for the coming generation.

It's funny that even my American friends who attacked me for supporting the U.S. war against the Taleban are now having second thoughts about their opinions.
I had to address this:
"Secondly, the wahhabis are in reality peace loving people, except the black sheeps like Osama Bin Laden. You can't put all your eggs in one basket. You chose to deliberately."
This is true. It is a wide misconception that Wahhabism is violent or oppressive, though plenty of wealthy oil-laden Wahhabis support really nasty people and don't have much of presence outside of this reputation, which isn't really their thought.
In any case, fundamental religiosity is wrong in all its forms and should be abolished. If Pakistan wants long term stability and wealth, it must be completely secular.

Regardless of how the Taliban's attempts to take over Pakistan pan out, India has to protect itself. The Taliban are solely Sunnis - Pashtu and some Punjabi. But ethnic divisions between the Pashtus, Punjabis, Baloch and Singhis are very sharp, Islam being no unifier. The recent riots in Karachi were instigated by Mohajirs and Sindhis against the Pashtu and Punjabi mafia who control crime in Karachi.
India must covertly promote, arm and finance Balochi tribes fighting to secede from Pakistan, Shias to fight their Sunni tormentors, Mohajir gangs in Karachi to oust the Pashtu and Punjabi mafia, non Pashtu tribes to attack Pashtus - there are many more opportunities of this kind.
The advantages of this strategy are many - easy deniability, low intensity warfare that is relatively cheap and is outside the attention of the world and long drawn out, one that drains the bankrupt Pakistan well and truly.

The worldwide economic recession and the USA's deepening involvement in AFghanistan's quagmire is exactly what Al Quaida set out to achieve. Pakistan's military cannot avoid supporting the Taliban covertly because Pakistan was founded as a religious state. it is all well and good to believe in the possiblity of a democratic pakistan, but that dream is a remnant of the secular state that existed pre 1948. A theocratic organising principle for a state like Pakistan inevitably becomes a hydra headed monster that is by nature insatiable, eating everything in sight, including itself.

Talibans were created by Govt of Pakistan under Madam Bhutto, trained & backed by ISI & protected by army. Gen Zia islamized & infused army with jehad. For last 60 years Pakistan's major sources of income was its strategic services to the dominant power of the world as it is always obsessed with hate for India. Every time army took power they legitimised it by using Islam, national security, corruptions etc. Lately talibans were their advance team even though they are on the collision course some time specially after 9/11. If taliban takes power in Pakistan, they will not dismantle the army at all, it's islamised army. For army who is refusing to engage gainst talibans, talibans are pakistani too with sharia rules. Atom bomb is a concern mostly for the world but not for pakistani army in an integreted talibanstan. State of pakistan never served its people, that's why they are silent against the rise of taliban. They are hoping for the best. Present taliban activities serves the interests of army who are waiting to see further failure of the civil govt' so that they take power again. Also PPP govt' could use the strategic situation to secure 25 bilion dollar, these are the ways Pakistan govt' always negotiated dollars in last 50 years ! If Pakistan has such a diverse Islamic community, precisely how do you envisage the intolerant Taliban gaining the popular support needed for this 'Islamic Revolution'? Much of the talk regarding the Talibanisation of Pakistan ignores the vast cultural and economic difference between the isolated north-west (where Talibanisation is a problem) and the more densely populated east. Subversive underground activity by the Taliban aimed at destabilising the government is a real danger, but to talk of them gaining mainstream political support betrays a lack of knowledge about Pakistan and the conditions which facilitate extremism.

There is more reason to be concerned about the Christian (US+NATO) armies encamped in Afghanistan. The Christian/Muslim religious war that was confined to West Asia is getting closer to India and will be a greater long term source of instability in the region than the changing character of the government in Pakistan.

However, India must take steps to guard its interests. The situation in Pakistan is becoming more and more threatening to world peace. IMHO India has to step up to the plate as one of the next world's superpowers together with China replacing it's former colonising power England and in not too long a time overtaking the USA. With this new position on the stage of world politics India has to take her responsibilities, which the Western powers(?) have been too cowardly to do during the last couple of decades.
To create stability in Asia India has to take action and stamp out Islamic fundamentalism in neighbouring countries. In the past the Islamic conquest of India was conducted in bloody manner. In the Netherlands Muslim fundamentalism is rapidly changing society for the worst. I hope India is not affected by western cowardice and dhimmitude and will stand for its values and believes.

israsel and palestine issues are history, if you want to undo the history paki will not be there. why not the wealthy muslims develote the money and effort to bring up the poor muslims instead pouring your anger against israel and west. don't complain about women and children killed by isreal when hamas doing the same.
forget history and think about the future. religion is not a sport match to score more or win. it is a path to live like a human.

Dear friends , Talibans were created by Govt of Pakistan in 1947 immediately after Independence from India , trained & backed by ISI & protected by army. Gen Zia islamized & infused army with jehad. Immedaitely after partision , main aim of Pakistan was to capture Kashmir. At that time these tribals ( Mahsouds , Urakazies , Mahmods ) were not organised and spent time on looting , Rape and other crimes against Hindus and Sikhs in Kashmir rather than advancing towards Srinagar. Ultimately these tribals were anhilated by Indian Army mainly constituting brave Sikh soldiers. Now these Tribals have become organised with the help of ISI and got trained during Afgan war against Russians with the blessings of USA. We Indians need not to worry about these talibnies. We have to remain preapared against any eventuality.

They dont represent Muslims. The Biggest problem for pakistanis and India is Zardari. He will create Havoc and seek refuge in a foreign country.

American game to make west Asia a trouble spot and to remain their presence to counter Chinese power. Indira Gandhi kept America at bay because she knew what America is and upto. Present Indian government basically in the same cradle of Americans.
No body in the history has won Taliban/Afghnai/Pastun warriors- Romans, Alexander the great, the Russians, all have failed. Taliban certainly may be a threat but bigger threat is American domination in the region if that happens in due course to fight the so called Taliban. India must develop better relations with the Muslim neighbours to live in peace rather than going to bed with Americans. We have a large peace loving Muslim brothers and sisters.

Every Indian I speak to believes what is happening in Pak is a sad thing. Specially at the speed it is going down and political parties inability to realize this and act. As far as the India being Enemy, History is says Indian is no 1 for Pak and Vis versa. That will is a debate exists only if Pak survives their internal enemy, the real Enemy!!!

If Zardari is incompetent Nawaz Sharif with Experience should take over. Neither Democracy Nor Islamism Can run by ideology extremism which has forced
Taliban to become Extremist Jihadist to Preserve Islam. There are Israelis being new settlers from Overseas occupying 90% Palestine with hefty income accommodation and jobs and there are 37 Nations occupying or so called Managing Afghanistan under Karzai expanding Swat NWF attention. The Govt of Pakistan could indeed fight India Army but is unable to fight Taliban. Taliban is not trying to bring Islamic revolution.Talibanism is an Ideology to preserve Islam in the Region surrounded by foreign troops and foreign ideology detrimental amid Zionism Nato allied presence with Hostility and civilian death amid India US Nuke deal with sudden disappearance of Pakistani Development Projects. 2)Karachi (MQM) is witnessing a ethinical devide

3)Punjab: Hardcore Islamic groups are rearing to take over the state, rural areas have been heavily infiltrated.
4)NWFP/SWAT:An ongoing Civil war! (Thank god Pakistan has just 4 states)
5)Economy: Complete doldrums!!! the president of the country spends half his time begging other countries for charity.
6)Industry/commerce: Massive power cuts, fuel shortages, inflation, severe economic downturn. Absolutely no confidence from foreign investors.
7)Political leadership: Non existant
8)Society: Radicalized, the moderates are supressed, get ready to see a lot of beards and burqas in the future.
9)Internation relations: The world considers Pakistan as a high impact train collision happening in slow motion. China is the only country which uses Pakistan as a strategic ploy.
10)BAD KARMA: A country formed on the idea of dividing a nation on religious lines, post 1947 Pakistan had 24% minorities they have been reduced (fled, converted, eliminated, harrased etc) to a meare 3%. In the history of 60+ years Pakistan has used terrorism as a state policy against all its neighbours (India, Iran & Afganistan). Pakistan has already slipped into anarchy, with almost 70% of its geography now under the Taliban control! Its not Islamic Revolution, but a 'Suicide' which Pakistan is heading for!
Even before deiciding to act tough on Taliban, & take them head-on in Buner & Swat, the Pak Army-ISI Complex waited for Zardari's US trip & announcement by US govt to aid Pakistan with millions & later billions of dollars, without stiff conditionalities!
Till now, it was the Pak Army-ISI Complex, that was running with the hares & searching for the hounds! It will in fact, sooner or later realise that the very terrorist outfits supported & patronised by the Pak Army-ISI Complex, have spiralled out of their control! They have now acquired a balloon-like nature! You squeeze & suppress them in Buner, they will rise in Swat & NWFP! You squeeze them in Swat & Bajaur, they will rise up somewhere else! And ultimately, what looks imminent, is end of the present government in Pakistan! Taliban will return back with a vengeance!

There is no other option in Pakistan
The Taliban will take over as the people there want it, next time there is an election they will contest and win. The Paki govt and the armed forces are scared of them that's the reason why they allowed them to have sharia law and to have control in Swat region. Now they are attacking Taliban because of their Big Daddy.
Watch out India.... They have many supporters in India too.

Pakistan is situated in a region where fundamentalism has been posed, of late, as one of the most threatening questions. The process initiated by the Islamic revolution in Iran has even been internationalised by the Taliban's victory in Afghanistan. At the same time, the rise of Hindu radicalism in India has further complicated the situation in Pakistan.
Recently Islamic fundamentalism has risen as an alternative political phenomenon not only in Pakistan but also in the entire Muslim world. Islamic fundamentalism in Pakistan is partly a link of this international phenomenon and partly caused by specific local reasons.
When analysing Islamic fundamentalism, one must understand that the religion of Islam and Islamic fundamentalism are not one and the same thing. Islamic fundamentalism is a reactionary, non-scientific movement aimed at returning society to a centuries-old social set-up, defying all material and historical factors. It is an attempt to roll back the wheel of history.
Fundamentalism finds its roots in the backwardness of society, social deprivation, a low level of consciousness, poverty and ignorance.
Like fascism and national chauvinism, Islamic fundamentalism finds its base in the petty bourgeoisie. But it is not only the petty bourgeoisie that is attracted by fundamentalism; those who have fallen from among the petty bourgeoisie into the ranks of the proletariat and semi-proletariat are also impressed by the movement. Similarly, sections of the proletariat that are newly formed and not yet equipped with class-consciousness and the experience of class struggle are also likely to become supporters of this movement.
They correspond to a section of petty bourgeoisie described by the Communist Manifesto:
The lower middle class, the manufacturer, the shopkeeper, the artisan, the peasant, all these fight against the bourgeoisie to save from extinction their existence as fractions of the middle class. They are therefore not revolutionary, but conservative. Nay more, they are reactionary, for they try to roll back the wheel of history. It is possible to distinguish four general causes contributing to the rise of Islamic fundamentalism.

Hello! Baloch
I read your comments. I must tell that there is no greater idiot in this planet than u.
Regarding venerable idiot Baloch comment > Have you idiots considered how bad of a shape India is? Muslims unhappy of your government………..<< I must tell it is the ranting of a stupid character who does not know the country that is India. Of course, Dalits and Muslims are there, but by no stretch of imagination, are they without rights nor are they unhappy. Dalits are fighting for their rights, OK, but most are coming through and climbing up the ladders in all fields. And certainly they are not living like animals,, but live like human beings far far better than your women who like worse than beggars as well as animals in your country. They have no rights (barring some places like Lahore, Karachi, etc, rest is all disgraceful. Always told to wear burqa and stay within 4 walls of their homes and be accompanied by male member when go outside – what a joke, this). MUSLIMS in INDIA are a trillion times better off than you fools in your country. They are very happy in India, doing well in all walks of life and most importantly glad to be in India (I have many Muslim friends incl girls (both burqa and non-burqa ones) who are happy here and who lampoon Pakistan as a country that is a nightmare to live in, where only bombings, kidnappings, lootings, killings and all kinds of lunatic acts take place and mullahs preach lunatic ideologies) Muslims in India are much better off a trillion times than yours and 98% of Muslim nations.
.
COMING TO > Yet, you are obsessed in Pakistan? I think India is the most unstable nuclear country in the region. World should worry if Hindu extremist ……….<< U are stupid to say that, cause it is you Pak fools who are obsessed about India, always scheming and planning against India cause u feel jealous. Whether its on TV Discussions or madrassas or schools or your armed forces or intel or political or religious people or just about anywhere, u people discuss about India and cannot stop talking cause u are jealous about our remarkable success in all fields (we are a respected power and admired across the world, can u say the same about Pak… tell me <<< NO, NO) No wonder US President Barack Obama asked you people to stop being obsessive about India.,,, did u get it, stupid)

A FAR FETCHED THOUGHT!
This article written by Indrani seems to stem from the fact that TOI wants to fetch maximum traffic to this website, and well, they have succeeded too!
I want to reiterate that a thought that the fundamentalists might take over Pakistan, is a far fetched one.
Firstly, Pakistan Army is quite capable of crushing any such misadventure.( So far they haven't because they were India centric in their approach and always supported the fundamentalists and helped them operate the madarasas).
It was here that the Talibanis and the other recruits of milatant organizations were brain washed and pushed in to so called Jihad against the Infidels.
Now that the danger is lurking around their courtyard, it's their compulsion to stop being India centric and save it.
secondly, Pakistan is not only divided on the basis of sects, but also on the basis of region. The Punjabis and Sindhis, will not sit hand in hand waiting for their homeland being gutted by the tribals of FATA.
Thirdly, the madarasa are directly being taken over by the governement to curb such menace.
The Frankstein monster that they have created is ready to devour them and it is their last chance of survival by eliminating them. (Who knows, The talibans may do the same to them what Al Quaida did to USA)
Till then lets pray Pakistani Army prevails ( In the benefit of our own country)

The article about talibanisation of PAKISTAN by Indrani is eye opener and shows the horryfying picture if not tactled with vision by our mandrins in south block. You can choose your friends but not your neighbours. We have shared history with PAKISTAN and a situation will come when for its survival india will have to fight TALIBAN and liberate different parts from the clutch of these rougues like liberation of East pakistan .Indian leaders should forget the war rhetorics and take unilateral steps that help the free liberal society in pakistan in matter of commerce, education, people to people contact and the same time keep our internal security in top gears .The day is not far off when in our interest we will have to fight Taliban and Al Quida in pakistan in association with pakistani Army. RAW needs another Sh RN KAO and India needs another daring prime minister like Indira Gandhi !Last but not least india and pakistan are like two conjointed child either they survive or perish together. This truth was relised by our first Prime minister and our short term prime minister Sh Atalji who could have taken bold steps of reconcilliation but neither the time was ripe nor the history willed so during their tenure...!

Arre, Ali Bhai
Are u in your senses??? Have u lost your head?? What do u mean by saying that
COMMENT> talibanization or an islamic revolution the indian gov is scared
ANSWER> Scared??? Never, why should we be??? It was only Taliban came within 100 kms of Islamabad. Now that your Govt is tackling the problem, its ok. India is never scared for we have the firepower to decimate the Taliban and any other mischief from your country and ensure that they are annihilated from this planet.
COMMENT > guess what, US is failing in Afghanistan and as a result the rest of kashmir will be liberated, and the indian gov just cant bear it.
ANSWER> US failing??? Are u mad??? They are winning, but the Taliban are cowards because they lack guts and cannot face their enemy upfront and only indulges in suicide and other cowardly attacks. It has neither the guts nor the intelligence to fight a proper war
The rest of Kashmir will never get liberated; rather the Pakistan occupied Kashmir will get liberated by us. U will not be able to bear it, and will swallow poison unable to digest the unbearable loss. Don’t even dream of Kashmir being liberated?? It will always remain a part of India till the end of this world. Your country will be wiped out by its own misdeeds (this is going to happen as has been predicted in religious scriptures)

Dear friends,
All those talking here with a sense of india vs pakistan or musalman vs hindu are completely deluded and wrong.
The main problem here is the ugly head of terrorism that can finish everyone and also make life miserable for those who support terrorism. Terrorism is a living Jinnaath (devil) for pakistan, india, all muslims and all hindu brothers also, in fact for any sane living being (humans and animals).
We have to strive together to fight out the terrorists and live in peace. Terrorists will try both direct aggression (through stolen weapons including nuclear) as well as through shrewd tact (convincing ignorant farmers and others that they are helping or supporting them). Together we all need to attack, destabilize (and if possible help them come out of this mindset) the entire terrorist setup throughout the world irrespective of religion, caste or economic power.
Thank you for listening to my humble opinions
