Launch of spy satellite

Indrani Bagchi,  21 April 2009, 03:19 PM IST

The launch of the spy satellite, RISAT-2 has set pulses racing, hopes raised that we may finally be able to pre-empt Pakistani terrorists from coming across. On the geopolitical front, the satellite gives conspiracy theorists lots to talk about, specially the burgeoning relationship between India and Israel.

But there is a related advantage that none of us really focus on, and this is in the area of military upgradation. While the world is hyperventilating on whether China will acquire an aircraft carrier, missiles etc, have you thought of the fact that India can access better military hardware and technology from parts of the world that is out of bounds for China?

Europe with their arms embargo, Israel, because of the US and India and the US itself, a lot of stuff that India can now legitimately acquire is forbidden fruit for Beijing. So why, will someone tell me, do we continue to wring our hands about China?

Instead, lets wring our hands about something we need a lot more. We need a lot less corruption in defence procurement (that is asking for the moon, but somebody has to ask), more transparent and streamlined procedures and a recognition of the bigger picture. What good is all that equipment if our security forces suffer from basic lack of coordination leading to the unholy mess that we cringed from collectively during the 72-hour Mumbai attacks.

true, but beside corruption free procurement there's need of inhouse technology development and also development of defence production facility is required in our own country .....step by step our scientists are approaching the way ....but still all the decisions and policies are to be framed by politicians and it is always under the influence of their party which changes with the party in power..........

The spy satellite is not going to make any difference to the common man against terrorism. No govt of the day since terrorism hit us some 22 years ago has introduced counter-terrorism measures despite a flood of recommendations on this issue by our intelligentsia and the armed forces. The reason is simple: it is the vote bank. There cannot be greater vindication of this than our desperate attempts to protect the Parliament attack mastermind Mohd Afzal. After all, not a single neta has fallen to a terrorist's bullet yet and nor will any in future because there is a tacit understanding on the matter between the two!

India will learn from the launch of RISAT 2 and would definitely, would come up with its own version of spy satellite and already the work on this is going on, if you guys remember last year india launched a satellite which had capabilities and could be used for spying

A spy satellite very good.Who will co-ordinate the results from the satellite to the real action on the field.Deciding this may take a decade or two by that time Satellite will outlive its utility.Military decisions for the defense of the country are taken by the civilians sitting in the De fence ministry.A little inspection will tell how much money has remained un-utilized during this current regime of the congress. It is because these mandarins fail to take action for the purchase of the items needed by the Army,Navy and the Air-force.Who cares for the security at the borders with the latest armaments/gadgetry? At least 500 helicopters with latest gadgets and weaponry are needed to defend the vast borders of India.Who will supervise all these, whether B SF,Para-Military force,Rashtriya rifles,COASTAL GUARDS and what not.It is all gimmickry to fool the simple people of India. If there is money in purchasing an item it will be purchased.Let there be some record how many recommendations of the forces have been turned down by non professionals and on what grounds? Let it be compulsory for all governments to produce such records at the time of elections. This will conclusively proove who has the nation at his heart?

Spy sattelite launch could be a major boost for India.India with a large population and a growing economy should take really aggresive steps to mordenize and increase its millitary spendings. It should take a look at China. It is aggresively pursuing rapid millitarization programme. A wake up call to our sleeping Politicians!!!

Govt. should encourage private partnership for development of defense hardware and technology. Look at what happens in US; companies like Lockheed Martin (LMT) and Boeing (BA) do most of the development. US department of defense (DoD) selects best supplier by bidding process

Given the chance, I'm sure, Indian companies can help to reduce the foreign dependence for Defense equipment. This would also “encourage” DRDO to do better.

The Indian army can never be compared to the PLA. First of all spy satellite that India has launched was launched by china years ago. it may be landmark for us but for them its merely a stat. In no scenario can india ever match the PLA for a simple fact because they have a better weapons development system which india's drdo has failed to do.

as a far as procuring equipment from outside.
1) MRCA competition is taking too long just look at the way its going when we are understrength.
2) getting tech from US OR companies like lockheed or boeing or even BAE is not easy because their products carry riders from US regarding their tech transfer or spares

So the best we can hope for is that DRDO starts functioning better and a lot more faster.
we need to look at developing our own, maybe with outside help, but only this can help.

China Israel military business has been on for a very long time now. The AEW system that is now coming to India from Israel was originally intended for China.
Israel has actually paid a financial penalty to China to break that deal.
Israel has also cooperated with china on military aircraft development, transferring high tech which it has not done with India.

China has an extensive military program with Israel. In range and depth this cooperation exceeds our own engagement with Israel

Denial of American technology is not stopping China from building its own fighter planes and other weapon systems. In addition to that they are now the leaders in the satellite launch business and have even tied up with European agencies. This is at a time when the defence industry in the West is facing cutbacks and NASA does not have spacecraft!
