SAO PAULO: Hillary Clinton was in town today. She caused a little bit of traffic jam in the downtown area. She also addressed students at a private university in a town-hall style meeting, as if she was still campaigning for the US presidential election (someone needs to remind her that election is over and she didn’t make it). More than that she didn’t do or achieve anything. The local newspapers didn’t become hysterical at her appearance and television here more or less ignored the US secretary of state’s visit to the city, which is the capital of the state whose economy is bigger than that of Argentina.
The reason: Hillary Clinton’s visit to Brazil was a total flop show. The American leader came here – Brasilia and Sao Paulo -- to drum up support for UN sanctions against Iran, but the Brazilian leaders rebuffed her, telling the American in clear terms that Brasilia is not going to side with the US in its diplomatic games against Iran. "We will not simply bow down to evolving consensus if we do not agree. We have to think by ourselves and with our values,” Brazil’s foreign minister Celso Amorim said at a joint press conference with Hillary.
Amorim said that recent statements about Iran reminded him of the time in 2003, when there were similar allegations about Iraq that turned out to be "smoke and mirrors". "Yet the charges against Iraq never materialised," the Brazilian foreign minister added even as a red-faced Hillary looked on. In her meeting with President Lula too, Hillary failed to impress the Brazilian leader with her "facts" on Iran’s "secret bomb-making facility".
The fact that Hillary wore a silver cross necklace (an attempt to impress the president of the world’s biggest Catholic nation) failed to make any impact on Lula. "It is not prudent to push Iran against a wall," said Lula. "The prudent thing is to establish negotiations."
Hillary has been criss-crossing the South American continent this week as if it still was Washington’s backyard. But the main purpose of her visit was to get the Brazilians on her side in her plans to have more stringent sanctions imposed on Iran. Brazil is a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council and will play a crucial role in any future sanctions against Teheran. Though Brazil, which voluntarily gave up its nuclear weapons programme many years ago, doesn’t support the so-called Iranian plan to make a bomb, it supports dialogue and negotiations to deal with Iran and not coercive diplomacy.
Today’s development in Brasilia is very important. Finally, someone has shown the courage to stand up to American pressure tactics. Amorim actually called Hillary’s bluff when he spoke about the days when the American and the British were beating war drums on the basis of "intelligence reports" that claimed that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. Seven years later and after the death of more than one millions Iraqis, there is still no trace of any WMD in Iraq. It was a lie. The whole Iraq invasion was based on a big lie but the entire world bought the American-British story.
The Americans are playing the same game now. Now, the target is Iran. Hillary Clinton is travelling around the world making a case for "action" against Iran. The Americans know very well that Iran is not going to stop its nuclear energy plan. This diplomatic charade by Hillary is just a prelude to military action against Iran. The American have been itching to launch their missiles on Iran for a very long time. That’s why they have been pushing Iran into a corner. Those who remember the invasion of Iraq can recall the pattern: sanctions, more sanctions, intelligence reports on WMD and then military attack. Hillary is working on the same template. By refusing to be part of her plan, the Brazilians have taken a bold step.
By rebuffing Hillary, the Brazilian leaders told Hillary Clinton that the era of US as a regional power is over and South America is no longer Washington's backyard.
Hope the leaders in New Delhi, Islamabad and Kabul are paying attention.

Hillary and her husband specialise in lying. Bill lied to the US congress under oath. She is a habitual liar too. Iran has a right to develop what they want. why is US pushing Iran and others?

Besides being good football players, Brazilians appear good at speaking up! We hope, Indian media will pick up this story. Our PM and his cabinet have lot to learn from this.In Kabul we are treated like non state actors and then we are forced to TALK to Pakistanis, for the sake of their AF-PAK policy.
In terms of emerging economies, we are on par with Brazil. If Brazil can stand up, why not we?
Americans too need to relook at their role in global politics. They should check their popularity ratings in Gulf, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan among other nations.Compared to this, they enjoy better acceptability in India. But that can change if they continue to treat us like this.

If rogue nations can be US allies despite having a nuclear weapon why can Iran be allowed to develop nuclear weapons? Why should Iran seek approval from the US -- only country to have ever used nuclear weapons on human population? india should support Iran and not US.

dont know if the north koreans have much sense of humour but i remember one incident. recently when hillary was busy threatening north korea for its nuclear programme, a korean newspaper commented that hillary "looks like a pensioner going out shopping". that was brillian. now, the "pensioner" has put a cross on her neck, trying to tell the world what a good christian she is. is that hillary clinton's way of mobilsing the west (christian world) against Iran?

Shobhan, you are writing about Clinton's failed trip to south america but funny thing is none of the american papers have even mentioned the Brazilian rebuff to Clinton. I have been reading all the leading American papers this week and they have been silent on this issue. Interestingly, i came across a good article on Clinton's visit in a British newspaper which exposed how she constantly lied about the "peaceful" situation in Honduras. Honduras is in a mess with a torrent of violence against the people who are opposed to dictatorship in that country. Amazing that Clinton finds the country peaceful.

Point taken! US is no more the sole attorney and Judge for deciding "who is rouge and who is not!".
But, I guess India has always been firm on its foreign (and even trade) policy which is visibly opposite to that of US on more than one instances. India & Iran are good old friends & so is the case with Palestine.
Similarly, we've been able to register our discontent over warped stand of developed nations, including States, on Environment/Global Warming issue.
With time, we'r witnessing a more balanced world forum over full spectrum of issues. This is a healthy trend & true representative of democracy/freedom at highest level where no one has the power to dictate terms to others.

60% of crude oil import to India was from Iraq in those days of gulf war and US stealth bomber was refuelled in Mumbai. No surprise if India goes against Iran to support US today. It all depends on leadership at highest level.
