Rio de Janeiro: A few years ago, two kids got swapped in a local hospital here. The matter went to the court even as two sets of parents - one White, other Black - refused to give up the boy they had raised as their own son for three years. The interesting thing about this case was that the White couple was raising the boy who was totally Black, and the Black couple was raising the boy who was White with blue eyes. The colour of the boys’ skin didn’t matter to the parents at all. It’s very common in Brazil for Black parents to have White kids and for White parents to have children with Black features.
It reminds me of a case in London a few years ago, when a White couple were granted divorce by a judge because the wife gave birth to a Black boy. “It’s not possible for a white couple to have a Black child,” the judge had said while giving his ruling in favour of the husband who had sought divorce because of his wife’s “extra-marital affair” with their Black driver. You tell this incident to a Brazilian and he would laugh his head off. For majority of Brazilians, having children with mixed racial feature is a normal thing.
It does sound crazy and unbelievable how the Brazilians defy biology, but a little understanding of the country’s history can clear all doubts. Since the year 1500 when the Europeans arrived here, so much mixing has taken place here between different racial groups – Europeans, Africans, Indians (indigenous Brazilians) and Asians (Chinese and Japanese) – that it’s difficult to say who is actually Black and who is White.
I have been here for a week now and no one has bothered to give me a second look. Unlike in the US and Western Europe, where a brown-skinned, bearded face attracts a lot of attention, here the colour of your skin or the colour of your eyes and the shape of your facial hair doesn’t matter at all. Total strangers – taxi drivers, metro travellers, Carnival revelleres – have spoken to me in Portuguese. For them, I am a Brazilian. In this city of eight million colour-blind people, everyone is a Brazilian.

In Brazil, it doesn't really matter if you are Black or White. Photo: Shobhan Saxena
You go anywhere in this marvellous city – streets, parks, beaches, beer shacks, you see all shades of colour. Some people are white, some are black, some are brown and some are cinnamon-coloured. You see all kinds of faces as well – Caucasian, Asian, African and indigenous. And you see a lot of people with mixed features.
It’s carnival time here and there are hundreds of street parties every day. On Sunday, more than 2.5 million people were out on the streets, drinking, dancing, kissing and singing songs. There is so much generous display of flesh because of the hot and sultry weather, it’s impossible to miss different shades of human colour on display. But the amazing thing is no one seems to mind or notice the colour of your skin. It doesn't matter if you are a Brazilian or not, you drink and dance and enjoy the party. Everybody is welcome.

I have no doubts that Brazil has serious social problems. There is poverty here in the slums. The country has drug-related crimes. And it will be many years before Brazil elects a Black president, but it’s amazing how they have solved the problem of race-related issues in their daily lives and that too without the intervention of the state. For a Brazilian, colour of his or her skin is not an issue. A Brazilian is not just happy being what he or she is, they are comfortable with the colour of their skin, unlike us Indians who spend a lot of time and money in whitening their skins.
We Indians must be the most racist people in the world. In a hot and sunny country like India, it’s natural for people to be tanned and brown and black skinned. Why the hell we worry so much about our complexion? Why do believe we will not be successful unless we are fair? Why do Bollywood megastars do racist campaigns for whitening creams, telling people it’s good and ideal to be white? Why are we the world’s biggest market for fairness creams and products? The answer is simple: We are yet to overcome our colonial mentality. As far as our appearances are concerned, we are still colonized. And our Brahminical caste structure makes it even more complicated.
We can learn many lessons from this wonderful country. To begin with, we must learn to love the colour of our skins.
PS: I am off to Sambodrome to watch the Carnival parade here in Rio. I will post some photos of the parade in my next blog. Those who are interested in getting a glimpse of Brazil may see the photos tomorrow.

Mr. Saxena, I would like to let you know that things are not the way they look in Brazil. Brazilian society has a facade on top that makes it look very accepting, but there are big cracks in that society, which are only visible after you spend some time there. The European's are the dominating people in Brazil and contol everything, the Blacks and natives are always second. I would request you to research some more before writing articles.

For your information, Brazil is much bigger economy than India, both in terms of GDP as well forex reserve. The Brazilian currency is also much stronger. One US dollar is equivalent to 1.7 Brazilian Reais and not like Indian rupee which is around Rs 50 now. The minimum wage and average income in Brazil is much higher than Indian and it has just 40 million poor people as compared to 700 million in India. You should check your facts before posting a smart-alecky comment.

I am not Brazilian. I am an Indian but I am not blinded by nationalism. To know which is the biggest shithole in the world, here are some stats about India:
No of people below poverty line (living on less than $1 a day): 350 million
No of poor people (living on less than $2 a day): 750 million
No of people with no access to toilets: 850 million
No of people with no access to running water: 800 million
No of people with no access to clean drinking water: 800 million
No of illiterates: 500 million
No of children with no access to school: 250 million
No of women killed for dowry each year: 5,000
Do you still want to know which is the biggest shithole ever in the history of humanity???

Great obsevation. I used to live in Rio in 2002-2003 for a year and I had a wonerful time and pretty well experienced the same things. What you experieced in Brazil is also true throught all S. america and this may be due to the influnce of Pruguese and spanish culture, unlike British. The British wherever ther went did not use their power to exploit the women as much as the spanish did. The spanish totally changed the entire race in S America. Brazil is a beautiful country with long coastline, natural resources, jungles and has britghest future in the years to come. India and Brazil have lot to share and can prospure together.

However, I disagree with your statement that there is no racism in Brazil. In fact, its pretty rampant. The reason is simple: lighter skinned people are more intelligent than darker people, this is well proven fact, North Eropeans (German, Brits, Russian, Swiss, Swenden ...) and North Asian(Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Mongols) have alwasy dominated the world due to their higher IQs. Yes there are idiotic people in India but then there are people who respect every culture and hence India is a much much more multicultural than Brazil or any other country of the world . There are issues and tensions and whitening creams ;) but then India despite its diversity stands one . I am sure in Brazil you would not have so many cultures , languages , foods etc. Dont go by what you read in newspaper. An average Indian is a hardworking and mindful of others .

I am not saying he does not have a point . My main contention is that he is an Indian and washing dirty laundry in public. Don't Swedes have any problem ? I have been to Sweden and I can proclaim that Swedes do look us as downtrodden . But have they been so stigmatized ruled and oppressed by any country . For 200 years our culture was systematically destroyed by the white people . They introduced laws that our governments are too lazy to change. They created divide and rule and successfully disintegrated communal harmony. Even during the time of Mughals ( Akbar, Humayun ) , there was cohesion, peace. We are reaping the seeds that someone else has sown. And it is this white man that you listen to calls us fussy. Witch hunting , burning of woman, killing of non-believers, jailing of scientists was all prevalent in those time . There is plenty of evidence about poverty in Europe in Middle ages . At that time India was ruling the world but we were not telling them what was wrong. I expect every Indian to accept and acknowledge the problems we have but to take white man's opinion as gospel truth is not acceptable.

Mr. Saxena thanks for sharing your observations. I live in USA and I have known many Brazilians in California. They are wonderful people, full of life and they are like you said color blind. You will find similar societies in Americas, not counting USA and Canada. Also Cuba is another example. Remember the most racist western societies originated from England, Germany and Northern Europe. Wherever English went they took their racist mentality with them. Now Indians themselves have deep admiration for white skin while 99.9% Indians are between brown and black. But other prejudices also play important role in Indian social behavior, like caste, language, religion. We should realize it has a devastating effect on our children. Some Indian children growing up in US think they are black and lots of them feel misfit. I do agree that lots of societies and to a lesser extent Brazil and Cuba a fairer skin is desirable may be because our exposure to white races where fair is beautiful. I think it is the success of European society which attracts us. It is the law of the jungle(natural instinct) which dictates female species to pick the rich and powerful to support the next generation. After years of dating women of various races I have come to conclusion that brown is actually the most beautiful skin to have. so let us all say brown is the real beautiful.

Nice glimpse of brazil given by the writer but cannot seem to understand the logic behind the brahminical structure remark. This shows the writers rudimentary state of mind ... hello this is 2010 not early 1900s or before that. I am a brahmin and till now i havent asked any of my friends what their caste is unless they themselves have mentioned somewhere. My cousins are not even brown , they are black as they n their father were born n brought up in chennai, but they are brahmins so how does your theory hold true here? its true that my ancestors where due to their descrimination, but my parents and even my whole family or extended i have not heard anyone teaching anything bad about other castes, my brother married a muslim, we had no opposition but it was there from the girls side. But its sad that indians who are not brahmins put the blame on us for their deficiencies.. dont know what is going on in north india .. but here in south india no brahmin will care what caste the other person belongs to .. india means india it does not constitute only the northern part, and its appalling that leading newspaper like timesofindia allows blogs to be displayed in their website by the people who dont even know about their own country let alone brazil.

So no one in Brazil is completely white and eveen green eyes and blod hair, there is always features black nose and a thicker, fuller lips, and black has characteristics of white peoples.
To say that prejudice is no exaggeration, but bias can guarantee that exception, in Brazil we have law to combat racism, can not nobody inferiorizar otherwise that person receives arrest.
In general we live very well.
I'm white, i have green eyes and my mother is dark black hair and there is no problem with that.
I fink the beaultiful black and white, mulatto, mestizo, whate matters is the human being is not his color.
I hope that India my learn to love the color, in Brazil we have learned it,black and white and native brazilians are also citizens.
Ps: Sorry for my English !!!

All the bad things said about India (1.1 billion )is actually the the market potential of India. If all the poor people of India - 750 million (as said) and if they are to buy TV sets... how many TV sets...so to make them rich is what India Govt is trying to do since independence..and thats why MNCs are coming to India nad there is no recession in India. but it will take another 25-50 years to achieve this.pls wait..ref to TV is just for indication..
Regarding color bias...its human nature.. i am dark but i like white..vice versa... i do not know..

I.m pretty sure that Indians were racists even before the coming of the Raj.With the Hindu caste system it was inevitable that racism and intolerance were deeply ingrained in the Hindu psyche. Have a look at the paintings of the rulers of pre Raj India and you will see that the maharanis and womenfolk of the upper classes were invariably white or near white.
Most Bollywood female stars are invariably fair skinned and i have never heard of a famous black Indian.Yes you are up there with the worlds worst racists

This is the normal response of a tourist - to go gaga over a new place and its positives. Yes Brazil is colour blind as it has seen great miscegenation over centuries at the plebeian level though there is an aristocracy that is of European extraction that controls the society and politics at the top. Yet Brazil faces severe social problems. It has one of the highest crime rates in the world, great inequalities, a callous government and aristocracy, mafia who control the teeming drugs and prostitution trades and poor governance overall. Despite being nominally catholic, sex is the second only to football as the chosen pastime of Brazilians. It has the largest number of AIDS sufferers in the world!
Yes, while one must admire the absence of colour consciousness and absence of the "caste" system among the ordinary people of Brazil, let us no overboard and assume they are a role model for India.

its very true that we are still stuck in those narrow minded thoughts, which we very badly need to break away from...we all need to learn something from Brazil and its ever welcoming people.
