Rationalism is at the root of Dravidianism. Remember Periyar Ramaswamy, the grand old man of Self Respect Movement of the early 1900s in Tamil Nadu, who broke idols and abused Brahmins to lay the foundation for the Dravidian movement? Okay, now forget all about that, since Dravidianism has long been uprooted.
Now playing in Tamil Nadu are sights and sounds of Neo-Dravidianism. DMK leaders continue to be rationalistic – more in their words than in their deeds – but, when it comes to propaganda, religious symbols and epical icons are an integral part of the Dravidian psyche.
The latest specimen came on October 23, Friday, in the form of an advertisement—that of a very laudable government programme that provides medical insurance to economically backward people who can now undergo state-of-the-art treatment including life-saving surgeries. Now, the works: The ad copy shows a ferocious Yama, the Hindu God of death, on an equally ferocious bull (they resemble each other in a queer way), flinging a rope at an emaciated, shuddering elderly man in his – what else – death bed. Before Yama’s rope reaches the hapless man, a golden shield blocks it. Ding! (not in copy). Take a closer look and you see the hand that holds the shield is dressed in a full-sleeved shirt, and if you are really discerning, there is a hint of a yellow shawl somewhere towards the edge. No marks for guessing whose hand it is.

From above the picture of the great rescue act, chief minister ‘Kalaignar’ M Karunanidhi beams beside the words: Kaalam veesum kayitreththadukka Kalaignar kaappeettu thittam (To thwart the rope of Yama – here there is a double play of the word ‘kaalam’ – ‘kaalan’ that means time and Yama).
There have been brighter gems of Hindu mythological metaphors from the Dravidian stable. Karunanidhi himself was pictured several times in election posters as Arjun of the Pandavas. Holding the reigns of his chariot would be his son M K Stalin a la Lord Krishna.
Sambhavami yuge yuge.
Before you smirk at the thought of Stalin as the blue-complexioned darling of the gopikas of Gokul, here is another avatar the deputy chief minister donned early this month on posters in Karur: Lord Subramanian. BJP made much noise over the poster, saying it hurt the religious sentiments of the Hindus. Stalin just gave a ‘Murugan’ smile. Incarnations seem to run in the family. There may not be many gods that Stalin’s elder brother and Union minister MK Alagiri has not been depicted as during his birthday celebrations in Madurai.
It is not just the Karunanidhi family that gets morphed into gods. AIADMK prima donna J Jayalalithaa has taken several avatars, evoking a wide range of reactions from friends and foes. She had been depicted as goddesses Durga, Lakshmi, Saraswathi and even Virgin Mary!
In the land of temples, only some gods and goddesses get to rule.

In democracy let them have their way as they like why one should worry about anything which they do.They have their vision of the mythology or any logy let them enjoy in coming in different avatars. If people who are ruled are happy then these issues are frivilous. But ignore them.

When rational thoughts erode, such gods will emerge. Let Tamil Nadu wait for Rationalism rising like a phoenix from the ashes. Periyar’s ideology is not confined only to Tamil Nadu. It is still relevant wherever blind beliefs and bad customs prevail.

Nice piece, Mr. Ram. To any thoughtful observer living in this heartland of "dravidian" culture, it is obvious that the author has deep insight into the dravidian psyche. The dravidian parties, especially the two rival gangs of criminal goondas who alternate in power every few years or so, have managed to erase totally the distinction between reality and fantasy (i.e., the film world) among what was originally a populace with some intelligence. The hyperbole of the political posters, the crude and wild exaggerated encomiums paid to "senior" politicos by their "junior" or aspiring brethren, the peurile and alliterative nonsense paraded as literary gems by these illiterates, and finally the level of obseqiousness, servility, corruption, knavery, arrogance and high-handedness (all captured by that single wonderful word, "goondagiri") among the politicians, cannot be believed or even comprehended by outsiders. The incredibly minute fragmentation of the population on caste and communal lines achieved by the politicians over the past 50 years can probably never be repaired. It is amazing how the local politicians can still continue to bamboozle a supposedly-intelligent populace by raising the outdated, unwarranted and dead bogeys of "brahmin-domination", "aryan-domination", "hindi-domination", "northerner-domination", etc. One can only conclude that the population has been completely lobotomised by the barrage of propaganda into a zombie-like state of mind, where the crude vulgarity of the local movies has completely replaced reality. A real pity, because lobotomies generally do irreversible damage.

The politics of Tamilnadu is at crossroads. As we read more into the state politics we may easily find out that the idea of Dravidian representation has been saturated and hence the DMK needs to borrow social and religious constructs to sustain their politics. I believe that caste representation along with Dalit political identity is yet to be explored and if DMK fails to do so then the power equation may change in the future course.

This is an excellent find.
Honestly anti-brahminism is like blaming teeny tiny aliens from outer space. Most of them have left TN for greener pastures in North India and America. Meanwhile Karuna and his family own half the state - Isnt he the guy who cursed tamilians when they didn't vote for him? Hmm short term public memory.

Good or bad is in our own thinking. Why can't we take it as a message MK's party is trying to project that they are the protectors of the poor.
