Agni, the fire, cleanses everything - The Vedas

On May 9, 2007, a mob attacked the Madurai office of Tamil Daily 'Dinakaran' owned by Kalanidhi Maran. They smashed windows, computers and furniture, and set fire to the building. Three people - watchman K Muthuramalingam and engineers G Gopinath (25) and M Vinod Kumar (23) - were killed in the mindless violence. The Sun Network, which owns 'Dinakaran' was unambiguous while identifying the perpetrators of the violence: M K Alagiri's goons.

Two years and seven months later, on December 09, 2009, the Madurai district and sessions court acquitted all the 17 accused in the case. The judgment has shocked several people, but not some others who were closely following the case which was handed over to the CBI for investigation. Video footage of the attack were submitted in the court during the trial. And then, first witness who is a sub inspector of a nearby police station, and the second witness who is the deputy news editor of 'Dinakaran' turned hostile.

Let's go back to that dark day of arson that claimed the lives of breadwinners of three families. On that day, 'Dinakaran' had come out with a survey on who would be the political heir to Karunanidhi. Here are the results that amused political watchers and infuriated Alagiri: M K Stalin (Alagiri's younger brother and now deputy chief minister)- 70%;   Alagiri- 2%; Kanimozhi (Rajya Sabha member and their half-sister)- 2%.

If what the survey said must have unsettled Alagiri, what was left unsaid must have made him seethe. While the survey did not say who polled the rest of the 26% votes, a whisper campaign had it that Kalanidhi's brother and then Union minister for IT & Communication and Karunanidhi's grand nephew Dayanidhi Maran had emerged the runner-up. Incidentally, two days before the spot-the-heir-apparent survey, 'Dinakaran' had come out with another survey that found Dayanidhi as the best performing Union minister from the state with 64% votes. Then health minister Anbumani Ramadoss had got 1% votes. When PMK, then DMK's ally, protested, Karunanidhi said that he did not believe in such silly surveys.

Four days after the survey, on May 13, 2007, Dayanidhi was forced to put in his papers as the Union minister, making it clear that the Karunanidhi-Maran family has ceased to be a hyphenated entity. Much water has flown down the dirty Cooum since then. After nearly 19 months of open spats and closed-door confabulations steeped in family emotions, business considerations and political shrewdness, the extended first family of the Dravidian land said cheese to press photographers at Karunanidhi's Gopalapuram residence on December 08, 2008. The rest is recent history that saw Alagiri and Dayanidhi sharing cabinet berths after the UPA returned to power in May this year.

Three other families - those of the Dinakaran employees who died in the arson" are keeping away from the media. We don't know if their tears have dried. But we can assume that they are not yet ready to smile.

This is sad but it seems this is the only way to get justice in India....!

Nothing to be surprised about, this is indeed the state of the Indian judiciary and law enforcement. They are just hand puppets of whomever is ruling at the time. It is really a shame and one has but to laugh about all the talk India being the next superpower blah, blah, blah. What is a democratic country when the lives and rights of ordinary citizens are not assured? As long as Indians continue to sycophants of politicians and parties, and dont remember that it is the common man who has the power to make or break these political thugs this will sadly be and is a common occurence in this once great country

So well said. And nicely rounded up with the hope that the families of the three victims may some day smile. But I wonder if that will ever happen. As long as TN politics continues to be run by one family for all and all for one family, it really is impossible for families of the common man to smile.
Wonder if something will ever happen for things to change in such a culturally and socially rich state.

The only thing that can happen that can create chaos and bring this family rule in the state to an end is the old man keeping his word of retiring from politics and staying away from it though it is quite obvious that he will have the remote control to running the government till he becomes immobile and cannot do anything.. This case is clear, Azhagiri's goons were involved. In the Sankar Raman murder case, the opposite side is the Govt. of Tamil Nadu.

Here, it is the Govt. of Tamil Nadu fighting their own Azhaghiri.

Very sad that those supposed to be the custodians of justice, have strangulated the deliverance of its ends.
It appears all have bowed down before the powerful perpetrators of ghastly crime.
The police may not have strongly pursued the case. Presenting untenable evidence intentionally, empowering unprovenness. May be the prosecution is not intrested or got biased or pressurised.
The higher courts may intervene if murderers are to be brought to face justice.
Otherwise we may wait for the action by the Highest Court!

For their family problem in the politics they murdered three employees. Today what they published came true that MK Stalin is going to take over the state politics. Kalanidhi Maran is a perfect business man and Karunanidhi family members are perfect politicians.

Family of those two engineers, they had very good expectation of their children's future. But because Karunanidhi's family problem, those two engineer family is now on the road.

These kind of incident will rise the question that the third pillar (judicial department) of our Indian government policy is having power or not.

These kind of incident will hinder the unity of India and its democracy. This is the right time, for the government to feel that one and make some appropriate action to product our democracy.

In India, all the law makers are law breakers. So what can be done by the people? They can only cast their vote once in 5 years., that too 50%. These kind of politicians will win those election by the help of money.

Every politician has their own TV channel and Newspaper (simply media) in their hands, so these kind of news will not reach the public.

Where is democracy going and where is India going? Its a big question in front of the people. Surely these kind of politics will be the root cause for the unwanted protest and liberation.

Mu Ka's shameless Legacy
In any country, a political party like DMK has people from various fields on the payroll. Mu Ka, a leader in his own right (have to give the devil its due), supported the Tamil Eelam (as differentiated from the cause of Lankan Tamils), perfected the divide and rule using caste (the Law College violence in Chennai is a good example) and has provided to be a brilliant Fund Manager. By bringing SUN TV back into the family fold, the NAV of Mu ka Inc is worth about USD 5 Billion (You could check the market cap of Sun TV & enquire on the un listed companies that get a cut on all big government projects).
If we, 'self respecting' Tamils, live of his palms and vote for his murderous and totally corrupt regime, we all should hang our heads in shame.
Over 3 decades back, a young student was slaughtered because he had the guts to check the CM's credentials. The boy's parents were coerced into not recognizing the body !! A macabre, criminal but brilliant twist. The case was thrown out. Today, the judiciary let down the people of the state with a hollow verdict.
Mu Ka, your sycophants could fudge the history books but you & your family will go down in history as a bunch of murderous hooligans.
Unfortunately, you are lucky...Jaya is as bad as you are....
Vazhaga Tamizhagam
I CONGRATULATE ARUN RAM AND TOI for some courageous reporting. Thank you Sir.

Jogendra says:

Well we should be careful here before jumping into conclusion that Judiciary is wrong. It is the political system which has paralizied the whole country. And when it comes to TamilNadu then it is even worse. Who can challenge DMK's masters. We do talk lot about Raj's MNS , Shivsena but actually they are there because TamilNadu people supported such politicians and country did nothing than. SO now they are role model for all such new family of Raj Thakerys. But its democracy even after this Tamilnadu people will vote for these criminals and bring them back to power. So I believe it is the shame for TamilNadu people and their society that what bad image they are creating of great land of TamilNadu in front of whole world.

Satbir Singh Bedi says:

December 10,2009 at 04:27 PM IST

Sir, In fact, no person has killed so many persons who were murdered. If we have all the files of the police departments and CBI opened about the murders that took place throughout India, we would see that so many people were murdered but the police closed the cases as they could not get hold of the murderer. Similarly, so many accuseds went scot free after trials in the Court. If all the files relating to murder cases of the Courts are opened, we would see that the conviction rate is very nominal and most of the people go scot free. Then there are cases where the police officers indulge in fake encounters and custodial deaths. The general answer as to who killed the people murdered in fake encounters or custodial death is that no police officer killed them. Most of the police officers responsible for the killings also go scot free. One of the reasons for this is that no body wants to be a witness for fear of the actual killer involved in the murder because the killer happens to be a big politician, a dreaded killer or a police officer.

Now a cabinet Minister Alagiri, who can't even converse with average human for 30 mins in any subjects except how to kill the people or run corruption. India is one of the top corrupt democracies and judiciaries in the world.

success has many fathers but failure has none.when this is the mantra of indian judiciary who are themselves are compromised then to expect a fair&balanced verdict is asking for too much.as the indian saying goes,"YETHA PRAJA THATHA RAJA".so when the constituents accept sari&dhoti and rice before voting the election itself is compromised so the emotional outburst of indians in the comments section sounds comical&diabolical all at once.unfortunately democracy in india will be successful when employment approaches atleast 95%.then the voters automatically know whom to elect, till then they elect to have their free ROTI&KAPDA. jai HIND.VANDE MATARAM.

Great verdict. Indeed. How else could you describe this when video footages, photos and other direct evidences could be so ignored. Just goes to show that you dont need any evidence to be acquitted. So people, go ahead and kill the SOBs. You would be acquitted even if millions watched it.

Touchy Article. I wish to end this episode like a Tamil movie let the Hero come and finish the conspirators.

Very good article with powerful language. Police should be made as independent of the political system.

Any laws passed and regulations put in place, at the end of the day, when enforcement dept is corrupted, no use.

"...the second witness who is the deputy news editor of 'Dinakaran' turned hostile."

Is Cooum as putrid as the guy mentioned above?

ABOUT ARUN RAM More
If Indian politics is a theatre, Tamil Nadu is a multiplex. Where cigarette flicks and dark glasses are the perennial symbols of style and substance, sycophancy does a tandava over psephology. And with the players ensconced in the ministerial thrones in Delhi, it is no longer just a southern delight. Arun Ram, metro editor of The Times Of India in Chennai, who alternates between the balcony and the front row, says it incites as much as it excites. During the intervals, he chews on a bit of science and such saner things.
