Daffodils in face of bullets

Tarun Vijay
04 February 2010, 07:55 PM IST

In times of a petty political strife hogging headlines and the very concept of Indian under strain, a great number of dedicated souls are trying to help daffodils - symbolizing friendship - flower in their own way. Naturally, the media's award-winner sirens won't be interested in it. There are people who think they can bring about a change in society through bullets and take up guns killing innocent Indians. But there are many others who choose the placid path of silent devotion and service, helping daffodils of joy flower. They are there in every area of our land, comprising varied religious or spiritual, or even atheist, groups who consider people alone are their God. Here is one unknown chapter from that grand book of sharing the joy which genuinely makes the fibres that weave the Indian fabric beyond boundaries.

Ashok Kukde, a highly qualified medical practitioner, thought of providing the best medical facilities to the poor and disadvantaged in the remote rural area of Latur and with four of his doctor friends started Vivekananda Hospital way back in 1966. It grew wonderfully with local support and developed into a 120-bed superspecialty medical centre providing the best medical help to 50,000 patients every year half the cost other hospitals charge. It was recognized as a postgraduate training centre by the government's National Board of Examination in Medicine. Dr Kukde, an MS in general surgery, is the chief of the RSS organizational network of that region comprising five states and a member of RSS national executive. Surely, he will never get a Padma award.

Shyam Parande told me this story from Tamil Nadu. A woman full-timer, Seva Vrati as they are known, narrated the action in one of the Self Help Groups (SHGs) in Kanyakumari district in which more than 3000 SHGs are being managed by women under Seva Bharati. In a village called Thirparappu, the SHG comprised 18 women members belonging to one particular caste and two members from another caste. Caste divisions in rural areas are distinct and divide society many a time. The caste association wanted the less-represented-caste women to be removed from the SHG. The activists who were running the SHG refused bluntly to budge.

In Kanpur, the grandson of a great RSS leader and a legendary barrister who originally hailed from Kashmir, spent all his profits from business to establish a centre of child empowerment, Vatsalya Mandir, bringing little girls and boys from slums and remote poverty struck villages who would, in many instances have ended up as beggars. He is efficiently but silently running it with facilities for improving English communications skills and training in IT. Having been associated with it, I can guarantee this centre would produce meritorious sportspersons and promising administrative officers.

Recently, Doordarshan, Sahyadri, telecast an inspiring story on the "Samvedna Cerebral Palsy Vikasan Kendra", an organization working for Cerebral Palsy in Maharashtra recognized for its efficacy by the central government. In Assam, more than 5000 healthcare centers are being run efficiently with a thousand bare-foot doctors, called Arogya Rakshaks, comprising a large number of women medical-help providers. In more than one instance, they have saved the lives of patients in dire need of immediate primary medical care. At the all-India level there are more than 5,000 bare-foot doctors providing basic and primary medical help to rural folks in times of emergency. They are all trained in primary healthcare and work voluntarily, not getting any salary. "To serve humanity is to serve God" is their slogan, as was said by Dr Hedgewar, the RSS founder.

A Pune centre Seva Vardhini is efficiently running several service projects in education, child rights and gender equality under a young IAS officer Ravindra Wanjarvadkar, who resigned as district collector to devote more time to social empowerment. When I was in Pune this Republic Day, I met a young activist, Kshipra Vaidya, who was working among the dyslexic children educating parents and training teachers. She was a student leader in ABVP, and chose this field as her career after marriage. Similarly Mohan Rao Ghaisas, an RSS chief of the area, working among tribal farmers under an organization Suyash, formed 168 self-help groups to encourage water harvesting and  bio-farming, making them get many times more yield per acre and improving their economic status.

Rashtriya Seva Bharati affiliate groups number many thousands. In a global record making effort, RSS-inspired workers have  spread  centres of literacy and social values to more than 27,041 centres called 'One Teacher, One Schools' (Ekal Vidyalayas) catering to 7,53,123 students (as on January 2010)  in remote rural areas who would otherwise have no access to schooling. In the formal education sector, Vidya Bharati is running 25,000 schools in virtually every corner of the land with student enrolment crossing an astounding figure 2.5 million - all under one federal structure enabling a pan-Indian vision strengthened in times when fragmentation pays political dividends.

In Aurangabad, a 150-bedded hospital, Dr Hedgewar Rugnalaya, was established to commemorate the birth centenary of the RSS founder in 1989. It provides medical help, almost at negligible cost to more than 600 patients daily and has 35 highly qualified doctors and surgeons like Dr Tupkari and Dr Diwakar Kulkarni on its rolls. But its specialization stretches to another facet too: treating the caste-ridden social malaises and hence it runs several mobile medical help and literacy centres in slum areas of the city where doctors' groups go and teach little kids , giving a message of social harmony and powering voices against caste -based discrimination. Only slum area medical help is received by 1.5 lakh patients every year. Lahuji Vastad Salve, a great social reformer from the so-called untouchable class, is their ideal and the trust running the hospital is named after Dr Ambedkar.

From Jodhpur to Leh and Chitrakoot to Indore and Vizag to Mangalore and Dimapur and the border posts touching Moreh and Dibang valley, such inspiring stories are scattered exuding fragrance of one India, one people and one spirit to serve without any discrimination on religious or caste or parochial lines.

Nanaji Deshmukh, an RSS worker, established a new paradigm in rural self-help, education and empowerment in Chitrakoot, inspiring many a President and top entrepreneurs like Ratan Tata and Ramnath Goenka.

An MTech from IIT (Powai), Anil Vartak, is helping coordinate all service projects numbering more than 1.5 lakh all over India while a postgraduate in science, Kripa Prasad Singh, works with a thousand youth force in Vanavasi Kalyan Ashram, that includes women workers in a large numbers, among the tribal segments from Arunachal to Western Ghats and Andamans to Spiti, monitoring and helping 14,000 projects in areas of education, entrepreneurial development and medical help.

One of the brief info sheets of Rashtriya Seva Bharati, the umbrella organization of 400 various service trusts and societies, has listed a bit modestly, several of its works in simple tables. The following one, for example, lists its works in the health sector:

More than 1.5 lakh service projects can’t go waste, and if we also add the efforts of many other organizations working in their own way, through their different methods and policy inputs, the number of such efforts may run into millions. And remember, most of them are not funded by the government. Collectively, aren’t we all working to make India a better place to live? But then, to see it, we must turn our attention from Delhi’s murky headline making tribe.

That’s India, my dear. And not the hate-spreader extremist missionaries.

Great work - this is where educated middle class Hindus can bring about the change through out the country. If only the RSS would stop hating Indian Muslims and really do something pan Indian & positive, like training Muslim professionals for running similar programs in the ghettos & villages, that would go a long way in bringing all Indians together and uniting them to make a swarna bharath. I hope against hope that some day this dream of mine would come true.

This article was highlighting the achievements by Indians not Hindus. But YOU failed to see that..And that is the problem with you and people thinking like you. You only think MUSLIM. If you have said, they should train more Indians could have made sense but more you said train muslims..
Have you ever done anything for India? Ever worked for an NGO. When they teach/support poor kids in these schools/hospitals they dont just support Hindu kids, not just lower caste, not just upper caste, they support all kids, All Indians.
There are many govt and private organizations which cater only to Muslims. Do Hindus constantly (non stop, loudly, cry and whine) harp on that? Do you tell your muslim brothers to help All Indians not just muslims? Then why just muslim only organizations. Do you know that there are educated Muslims who help ALL Indians not just muslims? And I am talking about normal heroes not Kalam, SRK etc. You need to meet such Indians more.

Please think India. Yes Muslims are discriminated, But so are christians, sikhs, lower caster hindus, also upper caste hindus (surprised), so does marathi, bengali, telgu and if you go deep then we have telanganaites and list can go on..So you see in India everybody is discrimintaed at all levels -regional, religion, caste, poor, rich, women, men, handicap, villager, a metropolitan.
And please dont bring up the most lethal weapon of MODI/riots as the ultimate trump card.

Completely agree with Tanya. While we need to converge as a one INDIA, our politicians, reporters (barring few) are creating divergence to it. Let us see everyone in INDIA as an INDIAN and let us make progress to become true democratic country.

Regarding article, it is fantastic. Thanks a lot Tarun ji for sharing this information. Does anybody know some site that gives this update / write about such work? If so, please share. We can spread this info and motivate people to join this movements, help these people in their work.

Please do not overreact to seemingly parochial views. Due to social and political pressures, there has always been a sectionalization of people between Hindus, Muslims, and many other typifications in Indian society. Yet, the strength of our society is that we have always lived together, complementing and supplementing each other. Not just Hindus,Muslims.... many other groups, castes, creeds etc. Something that the founders of Pakistan choose to ignore, and exploit - with the help of willing Britishers who divided and ruled, not just in India but all over the world. Now fact is that we do have some segregation in society, and we need to work with that to start with. So there is no harm in asking a RSS leader to help organize social help in Muslim areas. Trust me, I have had the opportunity to mix with and make friends with all sorts of people from India, as well as Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Tibbet, Afghanistan. In core, we are all the same. Let the religious hatred mongers (in whatever proportiin they may be existing in a given group) or stupid politicians not be allowed to do any more damage to this great nation. India, in the ancient times, had influence from Baghdad and Samarkhand to Kambodia and Indonesia. That was not achieved by the raw and evil forces of polity - but by cultural influences. Let us not fall into the trap of tackling Pakistan or China in terms of their game - playing by brute force, but by showing how strong we are in our minds and how united we are behind our common heritage. And that heritage is not Hindu, but Indian.

Zia Bhai, I am a RSS swayamsevak and believe me we don't differentiate folks on the basis of caste, language or religion. I take english classes for the slum dwellers without saying that I will teach only to Hindus. When Tsunami came in TN we were the first to take folks to hospital and provide them food. Its a different thing that after few days missionaries came and converted the whole area, and then they brand as communal. In Bhuj earthquake also RSS was the first to rehabilitate the Hindus and muslims of that area. But again we were projected as communal. Brother show me any RSS leader who would have done anything against Muslims. Please listen to any one speech of Mohanji Bhagwat on youtube, who is the RSS head and you will understand how gr8 this organization is.

RSS does not hate Indian Muslims and every Indian can join RSS, irrespective of his faith. Hindu- Muslim unity is a must for this country to progress well in the future. Every Indian should do some amount of social work in their lifetime. RSS is one disciplined organisation which can provide the platform for such good intentions.

Tarunji,a very good article.I really liked the last line in your article-Collectively, arent we all working to make India a better place to live? But then, to see it, we must turn our attention from Delhis murky headline making tribe.

This very much sums up the whole story about the recent Mumbai controversy where a non-issue is being made headline to the extent that even sane people would start taking sides.I checked the atlas and my city of Ujjain is towards north of Mumbai and hence do I should also take side of so called north Indians?I dont think so even though I would condemn anyone creating divisions between people be it Raj Thakrey in Mumbai or Congress in Centre.

But,ALAS,the pseudo-Dutts and Pseudo-Roys in the media Sultante, devoid of any righteouness, ethics or pride, are busy generating hatred for the one of the most nationalistic people,as I know -Maharashtrians ,who are being made an object of hate by repeatedly agitating them on a frivilous issue which is ridiculous. To top it all ,people dividing the martyrs on the basis of region/states is even more disgraceful.

I know of many Maharashtrian friends who are par excellence be it no-nonsense attitudue, respect to others, patriotism, intellect or -you name it.Of course if passions are raised on an issue even sane people start taking sides on stupid things.Further Maharashtrians are never anti-Hindi.In fact we have many icons from Hindi literature who are Maharashtrians.Bollywood is even better contemporory example.

I think, at this time we are missing Resoluteness of Shastri, firmness of Indira and Statemanship of Vajpayee -who could take a grip of situation and cool the passions for common good.

In equal breadth I miss the Journalistic legends of Girilal Jain-who could provide a directon even if the polity unwilling/failed so.

For now, lets wait for Shri Manmohanjee Shikhandi to wake up from accidental PM syndrome and political secretary of Soniyajee to give go ahead to speak up later.

Dear Rajiv.
Excellent thoughts. I agree with you, I have lived/ ate/ drank with Marathas / Maharashtrians during my stay at Indore for few important years of my life. I found them quite lovable/ nationalists/ intelligent lot.
What to talk of politics? If Media declared Prince talks the about the regionalism of the NSG, or paramilitary forces, shame on him. In my life, I have never come across a face, where aspiring Prime Ministers talks about the statehood of NSG people. It is such a destructive statement, its implications are very serious.

Ashokji, those like u who devote time and energy for the national issues also have a responsibility.Dont degrade Rahul Gandhi by calling him PRINCE.So called dynastic issue is a fossilised creation of pseudo - nationalistic media as much as some other issues at the end of the spectrum are creation of pseudo - secularistic media. Why take a jaundiced one sided view when people like you have the intellect to understand ? Rahul Gandhi is cleaning up Youth Congress setting up systems voicing his views from a national perspective. Why not try and understand him as much as you expect people to understand RSS ?If there is a lot more to RSS other than what pseudo secularists would have us believe ( i know this because i am brought up among them in Nagpur ) then surely there is a lot more to Indira,Sonia and Rahul than what people like you would have us believe. Why not use your intellect to understand rather than pass narrow minded verdicts ? Yes I agree Maharashtrians are a delight.I am an Andhra brought up in Maharashtra,i love marathi food festivals,I have topped in Marathi in all my exams.Who is mixing up Marathis with Thackeray or Shiv Sena ? As far as comments about NSG is concerned let me make one thing clear.Rahul as I understand made the remark in a contextual sense which means that it is ok to be defended by Biharis and UPites but not co-exist with them.RSS has settled a thousand storms inside nationalist hearts like mine by opposing Sena.Bigger responsibility is for RSS to showcase its tremendous work as much as try to understand what difference Rahul is trying to make to the party in power.India needs two parties - both nationalistic, both broad minded, both secure about their legacy. If pseudosecularists have infested media so have pseudonationalists like Thackeray and Sena.We dont need them how to deal with Pakistanis.India knows it.A famous ad doing rounds says only 2411 left referring to tigers. That number surely does not include Bal,Raj and Uddhav Thackeray.

Any grass root worker has done this for his whole life what Rahul is doing. Why no one highlights that??Modiji and his whole ministry spends days in villages to understand their problems and how to rectify it. But does anyone talks that. Advaniji, Vajpayeeji spent their life serving poors, probably you should read his biography. Does anyone discusses that??
Here media publicizes this stunts 24/7 just because he is a Gandhi and a PM in few yrs. Where was the media and you when Rahul was partying at the time when 26/11 was happening??That thing was shown just in a corner of news papers.

RSS is just a cultural organization, where ppl gather in shakas, do some exercises, yoga, discuss about some great leaders of the past to become a good human being mentally and physically, thats it. After shakha based on your interest you can join any of the 1.5 lakh diff organizations which are run by some other RSS swayamsevaks or you can even start your own non-profit organization and ask other swayamsevaks to help you in that organization. These 1.5 lakh organizations are only to help the society like Sewa Bharati, Ekal Vidyalaya etc and does not include political outfits like BJP, ABVP etc.

But for babri masjid, Does any non-hindus raise anything about the 1000's of temples demolished after independence in B'desh and Pakistan??.. But there are hindus who stand against the demolition of Babri masjid..

Dear Awais, I have been to RSS shaka and numerous high level meetings. Not even once they have talked ill about Muslims, Islams, Christians, Christ. As far as killing of Gandhiji goes, there was a Judicial inquiry and the commission came with its report in which nowhere RSS has been even remotely made responsible. If you read the literature of RSS, they take Gandhiji's name as 'Pratah-SmaraNiya' (One whos name to be remembered every morning). Guruji was arrested after Gandhiji's assassination. Lengthy inquiries did not lead to anywhere but to his innocence.

Coming to Godhra and the aftermath, it was unfortunate incident for all of us Indians. This should not have happened. Agreeing with that, why cant you Muslims stop hating India and Hindus. Why still muslims support terrorists and Pakistan? Why Christians hellbent to convert the entire nation. In my locality I am seeing everyday entire homes getting converted to Christianities. If I ask them, they even do not know who Christ is..

Tell me, why should Hindus keep quiet. Shouldn't they be revolting. But no, RSS do not tell its volunteers to hate. But, RSS wants to win the people by love.

But I'm surprised that why you haven't written a single article on the stupid and idiotic propaganda of Marathi Manoos by MNS and SS. Isn't that divisive and threatens the very existence of our country. This is such a serious issue and we all watch those buffoons like spineless creatures speaking rubbish everytime . Amitji, If you stop listening and reading to pseudos like Dutts and Ghoshs you will understand that their is no propaganda at all. Today Mumbai is having a population of 3 crore plus, how much more you wanna grow it. Its already one of the most congested cities of the world with living cost soaring up. As the population grows the living cost also grows up impacting heavily to the locals. Also why don't we talk abt DMK and their goons who openly say that Tamil is going to be the language in TN and Hindi will not even be taught there. Why no one talks abt Kolkatta and Assam where Hindi speaking folks are kicked out of state or are killed. Believe or not but out of 5 major cities of India only Mumbai is the safest place for any Indian.
Delhi is the crime capital of India, a normal person can't live there.
Chennai is only for Tamils, no one will even talk to you if you say anything in Hindi.
Same in Kolkata but there Marxists have made it worst by making it a slum city without any development.
Hyderabad was ok few years back but Telangana movement has also made it worst city to live in.
So the final choice is ammachi mumbai. So pls stop criticizing sena and criticize the govt of UP or Bihar for not doing anything in there states.

(Reply to sac)- Raja Ravi Verma says:

February 06,2010 at 03:45 AM IST

Haha. You criticize Telangana for disturbing the calm in Hyderabad (and all they want is a separate state. They have no problem with non-local Indians settling there.)

On the same note, you should be critical of MNS too. What they are trying to do is far worse. We all are Indians that s all that should matter. People have invested in Bombay assuming that it's the business capital of India now if MNS has a problem with that, do you want Bombay to be made a separate territory like Delhi?

(Reply to Raja Ravi Verma)- sac says:

February 06,2010 at 10:27 PM IST

I was just highlighting the fact that its not the same Hyderabad. I never said that folks are bitting out non Telengana ppl. Regarding Mumbai, why blame MNS, its just a puppet in the hand of Congress. Congress is playing the game to divide BJP votes and retain the power.

As one writer has written, why don't you write about the buffoonery being provided by Udhav and Raj Thackerays. Are you afraid of them??????

Anil Bhai,
What great service Sant Chatwal has done?? Oh I know he is close to congress and did scams worth of hunderds of crores and CBI behind him for so many years. What gr8 service Saif has done?? Oh I know he killed few rare animals, left his wife and having a live in relationship with other girl. What a gr8 role model for our society. list is long...
Regarding ur other point if you stop listening and reading to pseudos like Dutts and Ghoshs you will understand that their is no propaganda at all.

The English media in India today which has somehow come to be hijacked by what seems to be a lunatic fringe of government stooges cannot continue fooling the Indian public (or even outside of India) for too long. But from time to time the so called Se(i)cular outfits have blamed and maligned their images by media or other means. This write up has shown that how the people loves the country and the human beings to do the needful for a layman. RSS has always been active in such efforts throgh education, yoga, medical awareness and many issues existing in the country to be solved but the congress govt always failed to do so....which is visible currently as far as inflation and the market situation is showing.

But if not, then I would be very pleased if they could do something about it. If there is something bad about it- well every thing has to be maintained - same with RSS - they have to maintain their ethics and culture and not get corrupted. best wishes for that.

Excellent blog Tarun.Problem within India is uneducation, not only amongst the illiterate and poor but amongst the educated and well-off! "padhe likhe jaahil" is apt.We unfortunately go by what the papers tell or what leaders profess and rarely have a moment to find out the truth. I was shocked to read that Chinas literacy rate has gone upto 90% and we are still at 65%.Indias enemies are not outside but within, and to fight them, every citizen has to take initiative.Handful of politicians and men wanting good for the country wont do. The "Janta" has to speak and act, thats when it will all happen. Our enemies are still taking advantage of our disunity, the same tool the Brits used 200years back.Doesnt that say something about us? Are we the ones who never learn? Are we pacifists(read as cowards)?Cant we take care of our own country? Are our soldiers not good enough? Are we sissies?

Dear Tarunji,
What a good description of Indian nature of sacrifice. But it does not end here. We are known for our liberal attitude all over the world. VASUDHEV KUTUMBHKUM. But this attitude has been misused by people from far off lands. As a result millions of our Hindu brothers were converted in to Islam and Christianity
I was educated in a mission school in Shillong in the sixties where 80% of students were from tribal belts of what was known as Assam in those times. The father and his agents would bring tribal students from Upper Assam and far flung areas of Khasi and Jantia Hills only to convert into Christianity. Most of my friends who came as Hindus were quietly converted into Christianity.
The only mission which worked as a deterrent to the Christianity was the Ramakrishna Mission at Cheerapunji. These people ran a charity hospital in the town of Cheerapunji and helped the poor Khasi people without any ulterior motive of conversion.
This land of Hindustan is full of people TYAGIS, unfortunately the political leadership of India has killed that nationalistic and sacrificing nature of our people. Whatever is left is a gift of organizations like RSS.
I work as a free lancer and give lectures on Indian heritage and its pristine glory to the young generation so that they understand the richness of its culture, literature and society. One has yet to find such a land under the sun. If at all there is one it is looted from Indian culture
During the earth quake of Gujrat most of the orphans adopted by organizations other than Hindus were ultimately converted into Islam or into religion of the adopted organization. These organizations other than Hindus always help at a price of conversion. FOR THEM SERVICE TO MAN IS SERVICE IS CHRISTIANITY OR ISLAM.
WE CAN MAKE INDIA A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE ONLY IF OUR MUSLIM BORHTERS SHUN VIOLANCE AND STOP GIVING SHELTERS TO TERRORISTS.

Please be aware of the following facts about the patriotic organization which the sickular media would have never told you about :

1. It was a group of organizations led by RSS which drove out (literally) the Portuguese rulers from Dadra and Nagar Haveli in July 1954 and integrated it with India.

2. It was RSS which was at the forefront of Liberation of Goa from Portuguese rule. In 1955, RSS leaders demanded the end of Portuguese rule in Goa and its integration into India. When Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru refused to obtain it by armed intervention, RSS leader Jagannath Rao Joshi led the satyagraha agitation straight into Goa itself. He was imprisoned with his followers by the Portuguese police. The peaceful protests continued but met with severe repressions. On 15 August 1955, the Portuguese police opened fire on the satyagrahis, killing thirty people.

3. RSS has been very actively assisting Indian government and Army during every war that India has fought. In fact Pandit Nehru was so impressed with the work of RSS during Sino-Indian war that Nehru invited RSS to march in the Republic Day Parade in 1963. 3000 RSS cadre , in their full RSS uniform marched proudly along side Indian Army.

4. Most Gandhians themselves have nice words to say about the RSS. Noted Gandhian and recipient of the highest civilian award in India, Bharat Ratna, Dr. Bhagwan Das commended the role of the "high-spirited and self-sacrificing boys" of the RSS in protecting the newly formed Republic of India, from a planned coup to topple the Jawaharlal Nehru Administration in Delhi.

Awais ... Can you please go to your brothers across the border then India will be a better place. RSS was banned by whom none other than Nehru..Irony is This is the man who was at the helm when two neighboring countries took parts of India.Just like numerous time i posted Hindus are the enemies of Hindus and that is why this country is being invaded, vandalized time and again.
Akbar when sealed off Chittorgarh and asked Maharana Pratap to surrender. He refused then in fit of anger he ordered killing of Children, Women, Men without mercy and in a day 30000 were butchered. The same opportunity came to Maharana Pratp in subsequent battle (Couple of hundred women , children) but he let them all live . By seeing this generosity one of the Patahn commanders refused to fight against Maharana. But Do you see any movie , picture abt this great man no, but we have Mughall-e-azam , Jodha Akbar like . Aurangazeb , Allauddin Khilji were fanatics and destroyed thousands of temples , killed or converted millions of Hindus still . Whenever Shivaji , Guru Govind Singh confronted Aurangazeb it tis the Hindus who betrayed them otherwise Aurangazeb would have been decimated. So Hindus learn to be unite . Forget caste system . make india aGreat country.

Why is media so biased against RSS? All they need is sensationalisation to get TRPs and money. They will write anything slightly negative about RSS and pro-hindu organisations even if they are microscopic but won't write anything about the good deeds done by them. Something is fundamentally wrong with the media and secularists.
Until we hindus shun casteism and come together as one this will not stop.

I have been associated with RSS from my childhood. My generally liberal thinking is because of RSS influence. They never taught me hate against muslims. In fact I introduced some muslims also to RSS. They were all happy. I used to have debate at my home for going to some harijan's house and having a cup of tea with them while discussing with them about eudcation and hygeine issues. It is an organization that enlightens the people and at the same time improves the physical strength. They taught me to use swords and sticks but only for self defence and not to attack others. I have been to some of these centers and found them to be of immense help. There could be few black sheep even in RSS but organization discourages such people. Nobody in RSS ever thought of prizes and rewards. Imagine that there is no governmental support to RSS but still it is able to manage its finances. It is one of the most disciplined organization. One of the most difficult task is to be a pracharak of RSS. It is pracharaks like Atal Bihari and Narendra Modi who have shown the light to modern India. These people have worked selflessly and tirelessly. Let us applaud the work that RSS has done and hope that it continues doing it.

We swayam sevaks do not differentiate people between religions, if any muslim wants blood, please approach Rastrothana blood bank who will serve you.
Missionary service activities are aimed at conversion. Sangh seva activity are selfless, media please do a research on this. Vanvasi Kalyan, Seva Bharathi and Ekal vidyalaya are the prominent seva organizations. These organizations spend minimal for staff or organization infrastructure, check their work at ground level.

A good article by Mr. Tarun Vijay which perhaps may help dispel the misgivings against the RSS amongst the people who have been brain-washed by the demonizing propaganda against them over the past 62 years after independence. Contrary to what is being propagated, the RSS has always stood for Akhand Bharat(unified India), not through separation, marginalization or elimination of others, but through assimilation of all Indians irrespective of caste, religion, language or region. In this respect, even the VHP which is alleged of hardcore Hindutwa is involved in several selfless social service activities, a small list of which is given below.

VHP’s 1 Teacher Schools (Ekal Vidyalaya) number up to 26, 880 & they cover 7,72,065 students of which around 6 Lakhs students are from Tribal areas. This is the largest Hindu Missionary work in India & perhaps even the world by a single organization. What’s more, wherever there is a Ekal Vidyalaya, there is Village Development Unit under which a Medical Centre is run, making the Medical Centres also to 26,880.
VHP has other Educational Projects: 569 Primary schools covering 59,300 students, 156 Secondary schools covering 12,750 students, 53 Sr Secondary schools covering 2120 students. Then there are 15 Residential schools, many Night schools, 104 Hostels including 44 Orphanages. All these cover over 75,000 poor & needy children who are given standard quality Education & many other facilities of life. (From one of such Tribal schools, last year Board result was 100% & the highest score a student has got was 93%) VHP has Health Projects: 34 Hospitals, 99 Dispensaries, 19 Mobile Dispensaries, 28 Ambulances, 192 First Aid Centres, 4 Medicine Collection Centres. TOTAL PATIENTS COVERED UNDER THESE ARE ANUALLY 2,80,000 min. There is much more that the VHP is doing in the service of the society.

Silent waters flow deep. That is why these people never make headlines. For years I have been watching that the annual lists of Padma awardees often include individuals with mediocre caliber who have been pushed into limelight by media or contacts over and above their more deserving peers. I am sure that these social workers did not come to grab awards but to give of themselves. They can be best celebrated through such articles. The awareness of their noble service spreads to us through journalists like Tarun. My gratitude to him for doing it. These articles also inspire others to follow in their foot steps. The best way to love India is to love its people, the downtrodden, the underclasses, the deprived and the poor irrespective of their caste, religion, language or denomination. To make our country a developed nation in true sense, we need the changes at social level as it's the society that characterizes a nation.

We are lucky to have organizations like RSS and its devoted workers who are determined to contribute towards society with a selfless zeal.

Thanks to Times of India that showed the courage of publishing an unbiased article in the era of TRP hungry media that always seek some sensational incidents to malign a cultural organization.
