My Family & Other Afghanistan References

Posted By  Abhimanyu Radhakrishnan   10 July 2010, 03:11 PM IST
My last post on Afghanistan received a number of (as is usual on blogs, mostly negative) comments, but one of the few constructive comments by a gentleman named Vikram , ended with this question: And one question to you – why are you wasting your...

Obama Makes A (Power) Point To His General

Posted By  Abhimanyu Radhakrishnan   24 June 2010, 01:53 AM IST
I was convinced that General Stanley McChrystal was fighting a losing battle, when I saw this PPT slide of the US strategy in Afghanistan, that had become an internet phenomenon of sorts: (Click here to see larger size version of slide below) ...

Mobile phones could increase slight risk of not having no chance of cancer ... maybe?

Posted By  Abhimanyu Radhakrishnan   18 May 2010, 07:38 PM IST
I would argue that my warped headline is just about as explanatory as all the reportage and even  the WHO study  itself. My understanding of the findings is that while there is no clinching evidence to show a direct link, there is enough to keep...

KKR Out? Nonsense! Even Kings XI Punjab Can Make Semis

Posted By  Abhimanyu Radhakrishnan   14 April 2010, 07:01 PM IST
While this is supposed to be a tech blog, I've sort of attempted to broaden the scope to all geeky pursuits including, with this post, cricket stats. I was always very good at the permutations and combinations part of mathematics in school because I always...

Stupidity World Cup: Pak Levels Score With India

Posted By  Abhimanyu Radhakrishnan   20 March 2010, 03:08 PM IST
Ever the fierce sporting competitors, never content to let their larger neighbour win easily - even in contests of stupidity - the Pakistanis have now leveled the scoreline with India after the latter took an early lead by placing a former Pak Air...

Don't Believe Our Websites; The Chinese Hacked Them!

Posted By  Abhimanyu Radhakrishnan   18 February 2010, 07:22 PM IST
My friend (@zamvin on twitter) who happens to be an American citizen by birth, works as a consultant with the Zambian government. Here is an email he sent out to his friends circle, about his visa woes. Its worth reading not just because our civil servants are...

Was TCS Website Outsourced to Fraudsters?

Posted By  Abhimanyu Radhakrishnan   13 February 2010, 08:16 AM IST
I mentioned in the recent post about the TCS website hack that it isn't a great advertisement for a large tech company to put up a third party, (Honeybee Technology Inc. in this case) as its administrative contact on the WHOIS page. Here is the...

TCS Hacked? Not Really, But ...

Posted By  Abhimanyu Radhakrishnan   08 February 2010, 10:14 AM IST
TechCrunch.com had a post up sometime last night claiming that India's largest software company Tata Consultancy Services' website, www.tcs.com had been 'hacked'. The update to the post confirms that only some users are seeing the compromised version of the...

Why India Shouldn't Gloat About Google vs China

Posted By  Abhimanyu Radhakrishnan   15 January 2010, 02:04 AM IST
The short answer: Because we're equally bad if not worse when it comes to policing the web. I would argue 'worse', because we're hypocrites. At least the Chinese make no bones about being an authoritarian state. We on the other hand like to use fancy phrases...

Why Promoting Homeopathy Is Unconstitutional

Posted By  Abhimanyu Radhakrishnan   03 January 2010, 01:14 AM IST
After reading this great piece in OPEN , I was shocked to learn that "the National Capital Territory of Delhi alone spent Rs 77 crore—or 7 per cent of its Rs 1,100 crore health budget—on homeopathy without a question being asked." I was even more...

Posted By  Abhimanyu Radhakrishnan   26 December 2009, 04:15 PM IST
Ok, if you clicked here hoping to see some sleaze then you're going to be disappointed. If you're that desperate and your tastes are that  ... err ... weird, then I'm sure you've already found and seen the offending ND Tiwari clip by now. This video by...

Why Copenhagen Reminds Me Of Physics Practicals

Posted By  Abhimanyu Radhakrishnan   05 December 2009, 01:01 PM IST
UPDATE (09 Dec '09): Thankfully I'm not the lone skeptic here. It helps when someone of the stature of Jug agrees in his latest post, "A Convenient Lie" . I guess now we both will be waiting for our cheques (from the fossil fuel lobby) in the mail....

Camera Sensor Wins The Nobel Prize But Industry Still Talks Megapixels!

Posted By  Abhimanyu Radhakrishnan   07 October 2009, 05:37 PM IST
The Inventors of the CCD (Charge Coupled Device) Sensor - the technology which eventually killed film photography and ushered in the digicam era - have won this year's Nobel Prize in Physics . But how many of you know what kind of sensors your digital or...

3G in India: Going Going Gone! But I officially don't care

Posted By  Abhimanyu Radhakrishnan   06 October 2009, 12:37 PM IST
For once I was hoping that my friend, Joji Thomas Philip, the country's crack telecom reporter, had got his story in yesterday's Economic Times wrong. No such luck! Joji was up at 4:30 AM this morning, gleefully writing up a confirmation (of his Monday...

Vodafone Wants To Make Your Phonebook A Social Network

Posted By  Abhimanyu Radhakrishnan   25 September 2009, 02:46 AM IST
The war for the holy grail of the mobile internet just got a strong third competitor. Until now it seemed to be a two-horse race to the finish: traditional manufacturers of mobile hardware/software versus the web guys. Both parties have been making forays into...

ABOUT ABHIMANYU RADHAKRISHNAN More
Abhimanyu Radhakrishnan (@abhi2point0 on twitter) hosts the weekend show 'Technoholik' on ET Now and writes on technology for the Economic Times. He spends unhealthy amounts of time playing with gadgets, gizmos and various other tech toys as well as messing about on the internet. Abhi (just about) graduated from St. Xavier's College, Mumbai with a major in Physics and a minor in Computer Science and is a post-graduate in Broadcast Media from the Asian College of Journalism, Chennai. That may sound somewhat impressive on paper, but he slept through most of it - playing MMORPGs all night was, after all, rather tiring!
